Hey fellas, I'll be in Monterey Bay the week of May 28-31 with the family, but will miss both weekends on either end of that week. Anything hot rod related to do/see that week? Cruise nights? Hot rods shops? Suggestions for historical places to visit? We will spend one day up in SF doing the fish market, street cars, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate, but the rest we'll be in the north end of Marina area at a time share. Looking for hot rod stuff to keep me sane, and some stuff for the family too like the Aquarium. Suggestions welcome!
Canepa in Scotts Valley(Canepa.com), Boardwalk Amusement Park in Santa Cruz. About 30 minutes north of Monterey.
Sapparo Japanese Resturant .... its a trip, they cook at your table ... too bad you dont have a Saturday morning for the 41st Starbuck Santa Cruz get-together (its weekly) ... alot of damn nice stuff.
If you like walks on a pretty piece of beach, I recommend Rio Del Mar west of Aptos. There's a neat little dive bar there that has cheap drinks and live music, and it's only a short walk north to the wreck of the Palo Alto, an oil tanker made entirely of concrete. You don't see that everyday!
There is some cool head there that has a rod shop name Roy Brizio is SanFran. Carmel, monterey bay is awsome!
I was told down the way from aquarium there's a auto museum never seen it but my brothers talk about it all the time
Cannery row is actually cool. I've never been to pebble beach, and I don't know why. I live 2 hours North.
http://houseofnanking.net/ if you like Chinese food. we drive to the city just to eat their, the best and most unique Chinese you will ever eat. edit, just noticed the date. the trip is over
If you got kids theres gilroy gardens. Though ive never been. In marina there is Tommy breakfast place. It has a 99cent breakfast that is decent. Mystery spot in santa cruz. Monterey has a warf and give out samples of clam chowder. In college wed eat everybodys samples for dinner.
We've been back for a week. Stu, thanks for this! We had planned to go but two kids weren't feeling good that day. Looks really cool though! Mashed, thanks man. Was going to call the Foster's to swing by and get a cool T shirt (and shop tour if lucky) but ran out of time. Kinda bummed. I don't mind the kelp, but the billions of dead tiny crab parts sand flees freaked the kids and wife out, LOL. Was pretty gross, but didn't bother me much. Didn't get to surf, and didn't find anything worth paddling out for anyway. At least anything that I felt comfortable with. Been too many years to surf a rocky break, besides, I was never very good anyway! Capitola beach was really nice, crowded, warm, crowded, and no wind... and crowded. And it was Thursday! Can't imagine a weekend! Thank you sdluck! We couldn't find anything near where we planned to be each day, but we did look! Lots of cool events for sure! Sam! Would have loved to catch you there but didn't make it. We had planned to leave early Saturday morning but didn't get out until 11. (Sick kids the previous day.) We missed the dive bar, but found the Palo Alto! Hadn't heard a thing about it until you mentioned it! I looked it up and we made sure we visited it, thanks! Thanks Deuce! Didn't make it to Brizio's shop but he is one hell of a nice guy. Cruised with him on a few Americruises and ran into him a few times since. I didn't see the museum either, but SOMEHOW the kids missed the aquarium! Yay me! Ed (and Mark), thanks for the tip! Family met us at the hotel one afternoon and wanted to take the kids swimming. Victoria and I went for a ride and hit the 17 mile drive... WOW! What an experience! We will be back one day to make that run in a roadster! Absolutely one of the most amazing drives we've taken! Thanks again! Mark, thanks for the 17 mile drive tip! The antique mall was awesome, so thanks for that tip too! Prices seemed a little high, but considering the area (and what rent must be there!) it was great! Found a few vintage tools and a few old mags worth picking up! All in all we had a great vacation and although I didn't get to do anything hot rod related I did see a few cars around. This '36 was in Capitola. Nice restoral, flatty with single carb. The only deviations from stock that I could tell were dual temp gauges and dual exhaust with REAL short glass packs... SOUNDED SO GOOD!!!! Thank you all for the great suggestions! If you're heading to Southwestern Utah allow me to return the favor! Sent using the NEW Droid HAMB app from atop my toilet.
I'm not a drinker, but sure love the vineyards. Being from So Cal I've seen vineyards, but these are really different! Yep, we're home, but thank you! We missed this restaurant but the kids were happy they found Panda Express.... sigh. Kids were sick the day we wanted to do Gilroy Gardens, but thank you. We did get to the Monterey Wharf, kids were freaked out by the fish market, LMAO. That alone was worth the trip! Sent using the NEW Droid HAMB app from atop my toilet.
Cannery Row IS cool! My wife and daughters love those shops and boutiques. Make it to Pebble Beach and do the 17 mile drive, its amazing! Sent using the NEW Droid HAMB app from atop my toilet.
Just for reference (short term, eBay won't leave this up forever), could THIS be the rumored museum? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/The-...sPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&forcev4exp=true#v4-39
http://www.concreteships.org/ships/ww1/paloalto/ It actually housed an amusement park, then a dance hall/casino until it broke up in a bad storm. It was used as a fishing pier for years until the damage got too bad. Glad you enjoyed it.
