Finished my bed mounts. Took forever just to square everything up. Seems like the whole thing is off by 1/4" everywhere :D

    Started on the structure

The bed looks ok, I definitely will need a panel below the bed to cover the tank, mounts and to lower the body line behind the tire.

    Thanks for the compliments.

I've been trying to get all of the relative positioning of major components done before tearing it apart. I hope during the next tear-down to finish-weld the frame and paint it. After that I guess I'll run brake and fuel lines and all the small stuff for the chassis.

I'm hesitant to pull it apart actually; I kind of enjoy seeing it look somewhat like a real truck.

BTW I love these trucks. They look a little more exaggerated than mine but I think they are perfect. I started a thread a long time ago asking if anyone has more details, maybe someone on here will know.

Didn't cross anything off my list but did manage to start on the tailgate.

Started with this, was sand blasted early this year. Very bent and broken, several bad patches.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1370234977.527324.jpg

Spent a couple hours with hammers and wood blocks straightening it (BTW I'm no body man, more of an ape with a hammer). Also cut out the worst of the worst.

    Made some new patches.

Also started on some new hinges.

Started to put it back together. Still need to make the corner reinforcement brackets and grind the welds.

Small update, spent the morning cleaning the garage and making room for all the parts I'm about to take off. Figured I'd roll it outside and snap a few pictures before I blow it apart.

Well that's the plan for now, I bought self-etch, primer and chassis black, so I'll at least paint everything but the cab and bed. If it goes well I'll try painting the body as well.

    Back apart!

Thanks. I need more space!!! Not sure how i'm going to have everything apart and paint it. Anything I put outside will either get stolen or picked up by the scrapper so it's like Tetris in my garage...

Your backing plates aren't fully clean unless they're Rolf fully clean :D
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1371443596.977587.jpg

This is my first major build, and if present self could go back and give advice to past self, it would be to not gloss over the details as I went along. My whole build has been sort of tacked together. Nothing is clean, nothing is primed or painted. So I'm now doing ALL the finish welding, cleaning and detail stuff I said "I'd get to later". Well, it's later.

Managed to spend part of the day in the garage today. Almost finished my coolant tubes. I need a TIG welder *sigh*

Whoa June 22nd was last update! I've been busy but with stuff that isn't interesting to look at. As I said previously, I'm doing all the little things I glossed over in the beginning.

The only pic I have is of the frame. Here it's closer to being ready for the sandblaster. I've since done more detail stuff to it.

Anybody in Portland have a paint booth I can rent? Or maybe just a big yard?

Well I decided to pull apart my motor and check everything over. I'm glad I did, bearings are toast. So now this is turning into a rebuild instead of just a gasket job. In my day job I'd call it "scope creep". I will be installing a bolt-on cartridge oil filter, this looks like a result of dirty oil.

That's part of the reason I didn't flip my firewall and went with a recess. I also like the rounded part of the firewall that sticks out past the cowl. Plus you lose a few inches of of toeboard room. A pickup cabs are tiny to begin with. I made an Angled bottom on my recess that goes to the stock toeboard flange on the firewall. It wasn't easy but it was worth it.

Your truck is coming along nice man.

I've been following your build, one of my favorite trucks. If I could do it over, I'd do what you did and not flip the firewall. Nevertheless I'm happy with the look and it's not too terrible a driving position. I'm bummed about this engine development; more $$$ and time.

Lots to do this week. I get my frame back from the sandblaster, need to call a machine shop. Have little parts to sandblast (myself), I should receive some new parts as well.

Bummed out I won't be driving this to speed week this year, nevertheless a group of us are still going.

Ok I should have known this, but any place that sells an oil pan for a SBC that covers 55-79 is full of shit. 55 is one year only.

Well a little update on my engine. Machine shop called with the list of parts and labor. For what they're suggesting it's really fair.

The thing is, I could by almost three new crate SBCs for the price. So I'm kind of at a crossroads now. I like the history of the 55 265, but do I like it that much? It would be a nice motor at the end of the day, but I kind of had rings and bearings in mind, not a complete rebuild. Like I said, it's fair and you get what you pay for. I have some thinking to do...

Pulled the trigger on the 265 rebuild today. Will be a really nice motor (I hope).
