I know there are threads about flathead heads and flathead intakes, but is there one for iginition systems?

if not ill start it out.

I ended up with a Barker twin wico mag drive unit.

Also heres a pic of my buddies W&H dual coil. I helped him sell it, he has health problems and has started selling some of his neat stuff to pay bills.

He also has a pounden 90 degree mag set up ill try and get pics of.

The Barker twin drive unit allowed the use of commonly available 4 cylinder Wico (tractor) mags to run hot Flathead Fords. Used to see a lot of them on track roadsters and early/mid '50s sprint cars. I would guess they were the ignition of choice on most V-8 60 midgets.

Thats what it started as, both harmon and collins and w&h did a conversion to put the v12 lincoln distributors onto the v8-flatheads. it basically consists of changing the points cam love and adding some flat brass pieces to he dist caps. im working on a home brew conversion for my self at the moment.

I asked Jerry Pounden about flathead mags back in '62. He said he had 'done a few', but only had small parts left.

I'd say anything Pounden is extremely rare. (well-machined, too)

I had a Pounden mag for a 389 Pontiac that had a finned aluminum cast case, a thing of beauty...it was like an idol.
Spielberg could have used it as an Indiana Jones artifact.

Yeah, its a neat peice, its basically a wico mag on a 90 dagree base with a special top aluminum peice that takes the place of the normal plastic cap and then has a v8-cap on top of it, i think it was a pounded/gertan(sp) it had a tag with both names on it. I havent seen my buddy for a few weeks but ill get over there and snap some pics.

its basically the same set up as this.

Heres a DSM coil adaptor plate i got, it bolts on top of the helmet style distributor and adapts it so you can put a good aftermarket coil on it.

Not so rare, but still kinda of cool. Old 2 piece cap SBC Mallory w/ tach drive to fit a Norm Frink front drive. Jim (aka Bubba) at Linder's Fuel Service did it for me. The picture is of it mocked up after machining.

Looks boss with traditional yellow cloth-style wiring coming out of the top of the cap. The tach drive is also a bonus.

  28. Had to subscribe to this thread so that I could post pics of my mates ignition that I had on my phone.

He thinks that it came from the fastest flat head boat in Australia In the 60s. Has an oil pump for a dry sump.
