I'm very curious how you made that depression in the tailgate with hand tools.

I see no distortion at all. Not that the rest of the build hasn't been impressive..

  2. Thanks, mashed.
I'll take some pictures tomorrow, I don't know how to explain it in words.

  3. So, I used my homemade english wheel to "pre-stretch" the piece and then rolled it in my hand cranked ... "thing", whatever its called.
Pretty tricky to crank and guide the piece at the same time...!
But I guess I have to do it all over again...
Take a look at the picture where you see both the tailgate and the rear window.
    Thats ugly!!!
    A square and an oval...
Ill do another one, more a combination of those two.
    Maybe.
The exhaust pipes... I mean the upper edge of the bedsides are now ready for welding.
Looking like a whorehouse bathtub from 1878.
Yes! Im that old! So what!
    :D
    Enjoy.

Agreed...!!! One or the other needs to match...but I can't foresee the square part in the tailgate...

So, exactly what and where were those outlets on a "whorehouse bathtub"...??? I've never been privvy to a "whorehouse" and am simply curious...and somehow, I cannot believe you are THAT old...!!!

    R-

  5. I have an idea how to combine those two shapes. Let's see how much "fab time" I will get this weekend.

Reg. the infamous bathtub, it's the upper round edge thats made of exhaust pipes. No outlets, just maybe some -"Let-me-out's"!!! :D
From that house... which I never been to either... friend of mine told me...

Speaking just for myself, I think an oval rear window would be cool & match the tailgate.

  8. My first thought too, but thats a little too -20th for me.

  9. Thanks.
I think they are a little too
    Heavy
    Weak
    Hard to find
    but yes, damn cool!

  10. Done!
The oval square is now permanently and for the whole eternity (and beyond) pressed into the tailgate. Bead rolled, actually.
Learned from an extremely talanted "Sheetmetal wisperer" Stuart Smith down under, <!-- m -->http://www.lonestarbodyshop.com.au/
to pre-stretch the piece before rolling the "oval square" to avoid oil can effect.
This is how it came out.

Man, I have been reading through this thread all day, and I'm just now finishing up. This thing is way freaking cool! I'm not sure how I've missed it for so long, but I'll be keeping up for sure. Really digging that taillight idea... may steel it at some point.

*Edit* Steal* geez... been writing "steel" too often...

Aw man... I get chills at the thought of hearing that much awesomeness inside a panel wagon! :D And thanks for the compliments on mine; it's about to undergo the knife again since I did a pretty lousy job putting the frame together. I'll be checking back on your build to keep me inspired!

  16. Changed the tailgate... again!
When you are not 100% satisfied, why leave it so?
Since everything else is done 3 times...
This time I wont change it!!!

  18. What a fantastic build, and nice to see something different at a base vehicle.
The third tailgate is spot on.

  19. Been working with all these bit and pieces...
Small vibration dampers on the frame rails to meet flared square tubes on the bottom of the bed to keep it from moving sideways.
A trailer hook, some home made alu shaping to let the rear opening... NOT THAT... have the same shape as the depression in the tailgate. There will be a mesh filling the opening and rear lower corners. Lot of work to avoid the tilting bed crush those corners.
Also added a 90kg gasspring to help the actuator.

Always thought there was a good looking truck hiding under the Superpoise, I reckon you found it. Fabulous work.

How about framing the doghouse with a wooden crate? Maybe labeled with a vintage European auto parts company name? Or maybe "Commer V8 Pickup Parts LLC"? lol

  27. Thanks guys.
Wooden crate have been in the pipeline too, but it's hard to find lightweight wood that also withstands the weather.
But its possible to to label or print on canvas as well!
    "Achtung! German Power!" :D
    Good idea!
    ...or not.:(

Wood can be waterproofed and sealed from the elements. There are many ways to make it work. The other possibility would be to make a metal box and have it painted wood grain.
