Hot off the presses! Woodburn, Or 5/19 Troy Owen goes 6.45/214.52? in the Legends '41 Willys. In the final, he backed up that AA/S World Record ET with a 6.49/212. That was in a Superior Glass bodied car that looks like a '41 Willys and runs at 5.5 lbs/cubic inch limited to a 6-71 supercharger. WOW!! More info at aasupercharged.net

This picture was taken around 1980. Does anyone recognize the car and location?

Here's a collection of shots I took when I lived in Denver. I became friends with the Bandimere family and they gave me track (home of the Mile High Nationals) access allowing me some interesting shots. This 41 Willys was very consistent running in ProGas at the time. Enjoy. Dick M.

  25. why were these cars so popular back in the and also today ....

also what were the production numbers on these cars ....

They were popular for a couple of reasons...they had the perfect wheel base for the gas classes of that time. Coupled with a 10% setback for the motor, they provided great weight transfer to the rear wheels. There were light weight, and the influx of fiberglass parts made them even lighter. Originally gassers had to be street legal, but as rules modified, painted head lights, and plexi windows made them even lighter. Oh..and they were "cute" (some said ugly cute).

I did some research and here are some production numbers from WOKR for chassis production during those years. Keep in mind that there are sometimes different numbers that have turned up over the years, so these may be estimates, but not that far off.
    1933-12,000
    1934-14,000
    1935-10,000
    1936-29,000

    1939-15,000

    1942-12,000

Those of us who have had them for a long time (30 plus years) don't have a breakdown on coupes, pickups, and sedans, but I have heard often enough the estimate of
25% coupes, 10% pickups, and the rest, sedans. Those seem to be reasonable assumptions...but assumptions never the less. Last thought...when you add the total production for all those years it is around 240,000+. Compare that with production numbers in the 600,000 per year range for Ford and Chevy...that's why they are rare.

I hope I am not out of line. I am one of those Willys lovers from way back in the very early 60's. I need help... I am looking for my '41 Willys coupe named "Mousetrap" sold it in the early '70's in Southern California and would like to find it and possibly buy it back. She made it in Popular Hot Rodding in 1969. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I miss her :) a lot! I know she probably doesn't look like this any longer, but I will follow any and all leads. You can contact me at [email protected] Thanks in advance.
