Help needed removing trans adaper

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by El Greco, May 18, 2013.

  1. Maybe it should have read "evil RTV won't let go of my adapter" . Anyway, T-18 with 3/4" aluminum adapter was RTVed on by previous owner. I hate to start pounding screwdrivers in.

Any better ideas before the pounding begins?

    Thanks,
    Tony

  3. What color RTV?

Most RTV' s do not like heat. The red can survive heat pretty good.

    NAPA permatex gasket remover.

  6. Black RTV. Thought about torch, but guess I should use a plumbers propane torch.

Making this all the more difficult are two threaded studs going backwards thru two of the normal trans mount holes. No nuts, but it is adding some friction. The prev guy must have RTVed the entire surface area of this thing.

I will give the carb cleaner a try, thought RTV was impervious though.

    Acetone.

Acetone eats up RTV type stuff and won't touch metal. I know, I use it on rare coins, I'd have no qualms soaking a million dollar coin in acetone (not that I own one) that I'd otherwise be afraid to touch without gloves.

I'd go with the acetone, and / or other solvents,...and leave the torch alone......Especially with aluminum,.....

  9. Thanks for the replies. I will nab a can of acetone at Ace and see if I can get this thing let go.

I was concerned about using heat due to aluminum and the bearing is under that plate. At least I was going to use the " yellow wrench" instead of my "blue wrench".

    Thanks for all the replies.

When I was rigging outboards on the side at my buddies boat shop we would silicone the transom bolts to seal them and wipe all the excess off with acetone. Ken
