so here is my dilemma now...this thing was purring like a kitten,,,now i cant get it to stay running. and literally overnight this thing goes from running good to not running to running but horribly...any flat six guru's out here? finally got gas going thru it, but cant even touch the throttle or it dies but will anyway after a bit... any id'ers
Your gonna have to start eliminating things..... The flathead 6 or L 6 is pretty simple.... I would open the air clearner, and as you give it gas and she dies, spray a little gas to see if its now getting fuel.... You may have some mayo in the float bowl from storage.... Check your points. Read your plugs..... DO the basics first
yeah figured i'd get some new points and plugs in it too its getting gas looking in carb and working linkage by hand she's squirting fuel pulled plugs out they are all black no strange colors but carbon.. just converted to 12v too but like i said it ran fine for 3 days and Poof! hair loss
Sounds like its not getting "Enough" fuel to the carb maybe a restriction in the line, I agree with spraying a little starter fluid in the carb and see if the idle revs up.
yes seems to be era correct when i researched a kit for it and im assuming its a 230ci.... 46 dodge 1/2 ton
The 230 in my Carryall has bee pretty reliable, but I have had to replace points more often than I would think necessary. Even though it is a '42, it was originally 12 volt, becuase it was intended to be a radio command car. The erratic nature of your problem makes me suspect an ignition problem over a fuel problem. I've seen loose distribuor plates or ignition wire shorts cause erratic problems like that.
I thought they all came with carters? was the stromberg put on after the factory? cause i found kits for the carters for cheap on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dodge-Carbu...Parts_Accessories&hash=item27b7bd6bcf&vxp=mtr
not sure about the factory part? never know, i only have it about a year.. http://www.carbkits.com/catalog/pr/c5/1/DODGE
Sounds like your condenser failed and you are burning points. Another thing to check is a frayed distributor pigtail wire.
could be..i'll dig deeper tomorrow spent the last 2 days fighting to get gas thru the carb, its getting fuel, just puttering like a stuck valve or bad timing
This my culprit, my throttle body would hod an idle, but throttle/acceleration. My 230 is from a WC, ten years older than my 53, the carb is a Zenith model # 29. You might try talking to John Bizal at; www.midwestmil.com He knows the 230 forward & backwards.
hard to start, wont idle, stalls(or flat spot)on exceleration, black plugs..my guess is you've got some crap in the needle and seat making your float level too high.
well still not starting ; its getting gas new points in and condenser man was hoping to drive this thing but maybe the body swap on the 85 frame will come quicker than i thought
hang in there brother! lets have another look at whats going on,she ran fine one day-the next day not so good, you discover theres no fuel getting to the carb, you fix that problem...still no good. Q..was there shit in the fuel line that could have ended up in the carb after you cleared the blockage?,did you fit the elect' pump with a regulator-most have to much pressure for stock carbs.both these cenarios(?) lead to float level problems, carbon on your plugs is due to running rich(too much fuel). Q..you say it putters like it has valve or timing issues..does it blow black exhaust , if you hold her wide open does she ''clear her throat'' and rev clean? my money's on the carb.
didnt find anything blocking the flow but the needle valve float position not opening up to let fuel into the bowl... no i didn't put a regulator on but i did plum it for a fuel return and a filter to alleviate the pressure from the electric pump... cant get it to stay running long enough to check the exhaust color...but i did rob some plug wires from another project and the spark on the plugs is a lot better than before...need to find a coil wire to match tho... i readjusted the float on it... but have not had any more time to mess with it today i had to take the wife to the emergency room...and they decided she needed to spend the night there for observations so not sure when i will get a chance to dig deeper on it this week
