just bought 41 dodge wc trying to set timimg . there are no marks or balancer on front of motor . the distribitor has two bolts one to the block and another on the bottom side of the distb. what does the bottom side bolt do ? do you have to power time it or how do you time from the flywheel?
Timing using the crank pulley marks is about 8-10 degrees before TDC, the 2 bolts under the dissy are 1 for the adjustment of the advance/retard and the other is to lock the dissy at the set mark.........DO NOT REMOVE THE DISSY useless you have some idea of what you are doing!..........do you have a workshop manual?.......if not get one.........andyd
You can find #1 cylinder at tdc by pulling the pipe plug in the head over the #6 piston and inserting a piece if straight rod and turn the engine over until the upward movement stops and starts down. Back it up to the high point which is the top of the stroke on both #1 and #6 cylinders, one on compression and one on exhaust. You can pull the plugs and insert your air blow tip in the spark plug hole and apply air pressure to determine which cylinder is on exhaust, if it is #1 then turn the engine over 360 degrees to get to#1 tdc. The timming chain cover should have a pointer spot welded to it for the timing mark on the front pulley.
http://forum.ww2dodge.comYou may want to check in with the good folks over at the WWII Dodge Forum. There should be marks on the crankshaft pulley, although they may have been painted over at some time in their life. The bolt entering into the block will release the distributor from the engine for removal. The other bolt frees the distributor up for rotation. If you can not find the timing marks, or indeed, that they are not there, you can connect a vacuum gauge to a vacuum port on the intake manifold. Slowly rotate the distributor back and forth with the engine idling. Find the place at which the engine idles fast and smooth. Tighten down the rotation bolt, and reset your idling.
