I'm kinda leary about posting this because I'm by no means a master fabricator. However, my idea is something that even someone with a little bit of skill could pull off. I like the look if gauges on firewalls and wanted to add some to my '28 coupe. I didn't want to just drill two holes and pop in the gauges though. I wanted to "frame" the gauges sort of like art. Especially when using Stewart Warner Twin Blue gauges. 1. I used a pulley and roller to make a template on paper. 2. With the template cut I added the gauges just to get a feel of what it would look like. 3. I clamped the pulley, roller, and a 2" hole saw to the table and proceeded to bend the 1/4" rod. 4. Once bent I cut the excess and welded the ends together. 5. I then tacked on a piece of 18 gauge to form the back of the panel. 6. I then finished welding the panel. 7. I then used the 2" hole saw to drill out where the gauges would go. 8. Once done with that piece I traced it on my firewall and cut it out. 9. With the panel in the hole I tacked it in place. 10. Once done welding I realized that my welds weren't the greatest so I added some magic weld cover-up (body filler). 11. Here are the gauges in place. Again this isn't meant to show off my mediocre fab skills but more about the idea of adding gauges to a firewall. It really wasn't that difficult. Thanks Kevin
That's a pretty good idea. They look like they belong there and I assume that was the desired look. Well done. Smooth down that bondo and it will look even better. (Hope I'm not jumping your gun.)
Forming the rod around some round objects...that's pretty clever. I doubt I would have thought of that. That is a good way to keep it uniform.
Yes but unfortunately I haven't updated it since 2011. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=559037 There are up-to-date pics in my profile album though.
Looks good. Blends in nice. looks like you might have been able to have 3 gauges if you really wanted.
