The Collings Foundation has made a stop a John Wayne Airport in Orange County, Ca. through Monday May 13th. They are giving rides in their WW2 warbirds B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and P-51 Mustang. I've seen the B-24 Liberator fly low overhead at my place in Costa Mesa as the plane heads West, out over the water of the Pacific Ocean. Man, those engines are really tuned to perfection!! There is something very cool about the deep rumble of a large multi-engined prop plane as it approaches.
One of my "bucket list" things if you will. Better do it quick too, there is only a few left that take people for rides...
They do that at the Reading air show in Reading PA each year. I always want to ride in the Bomber but they charge $600 a head. That's a little steep for me
i'd love to see a b24 in flight, living in the UK thats gonna be rare haha... my favourite plane of all time.
If you have a chance, do it, yes, its expensive, but talk about bucket list! I am shelling out $400 for a B-25 ride in June, can't wait!!
The B29 "Fi Fi" Does tours thru the Fort Worth Alliance airport a couple of times a year. Man when they get all four engines spun up it is a sound and feel beyond description. The modern era bombers are cool but something about the old prop bombers and war birds sure can stir your emotions.
They swing by the McaAllister Museum of Aviation http://www.mcallistermuseum.org/ at the Yakima, Wa airport a couple of times a year and I get a front row seat from where I work at the airport.
I live in Costa Mesa too and the last couple of nights when I get home from work they are all taking off for their last flight of the day. So cool to stand in the back yard and watch them go over at 2500-3000 ft. I can only imagine what it must have been like to have a whole formation fly over in war time.
