My grandfather used to tell me when they built the drive in in my home town a guy who owned property next to it wanted them to buy his property. They refused so he brought in hogs and started raising them. A couple months of the smell and they bought him out.

Farmergal, you remind me of one of the few times we went to the Mansfield drive-in. It was still light out, waiting to see "Batman Begins". There was a couple, mid-20's in a Suburban next to us. I noticed that they were making out some, but didn't pay much attention. About 10 minutes after we parked, they took off out of there in a hurry. I made a comment to my wife about them and she said she saw a lot more going on in that car than just making out. Rats, I missed it.

I graduated high school in 1978. At that time there were three drive-ins in Rockford, IL. The Robin, the Sunset, and the Belford. The Sunset played T&A movies most of the time and high school girls weren't interested in going to see them. The Belford had two separate outdoor screens and one indoor theater so there was always something playing there worth going to. I have to admit that I was pretty lucky in school and I pretty much always had a girlfriend so I did manage to listen to a lot of movies from the back seat of my mom's '69 Ford Country Squire wagon. Mom thought no high school kid could get into trouble in a '69 Ford wagon with a 302 with a 2 barrel carb. No hot rodding that car. I really don't think Mom knew that the rear seat went down to make a nice large deck. All three of the theaters closed down years ago but, the Belford was operated by Kerasotes Theatres, which ended up having this popular drive-in demolished and replaced with the ShowPlace 16 megaplex.

This happened in the early 60s. We had a 59 blue and white Ford station wagon. The whole family went to the drive-in and I had to pee. I went to the concession stand restroom and came out, got into a blue and white 59 Ford and didn't know anybody, "said oops wrong car". When I got out of the 59 Ford 4 door and got into the station wagon, everybody was laughing at me.

One of my best friends own the Judy Drive-In in Mt Sterling, KY. He bought the place when he was like 23 or 24. I can tell you that the backrow shenanigans still happen, there's also a bit of libations consumed and once in awhile you get a complaint about the smell of burnt rope coming from a vehicle. It's all against theater policy but you can't control it.

Just before opening this year we installed the new digital projector. Most people seem to think they are a small box like you see in someones highend man cave projecting films on a wall. Guess again pal.

Back in the mid 60's friday night was drive-in night. My girl at that time was to young to go to the lounge's with the rest of my group so we would go to the drive-in. We even feel asleep one night and the owner was driving around about 2:am and started blowing his horn, scared the hell out if us, plus we were really late getting home oops. We spent many a night enjoying movies (what movies) at the drive-in. Luckly my girl is my wife today, 48 years thanks DO Drive in, Metairie La.

John B, we get out that way about once a year (stay in Ashland), I'll have to look up that place and take in a flick. None left close to home. If I were brave enough I'd drive the Shoebox to Kentucky. With better tires and brakes I just might.

Summer 1989, junior in college, air is electric...like it wants to rain but the heat of the summer night is fighting against the black clouds forming miles in the distance. Me and my squeeze, a 5'10" brunette, perfect from every angle and smelled even sweeter, head to the last of the drive-ins in the Sacramento area...just off hwy 50. The '56 pickup is looking great in it's two-tone aqua and off-white skin and is running even better...engine making sweet music because the radio wasn't working, and she preferred listening to the truck as much as I did.

We pull up, pay the $6 each for a double-feature and I back into our spot because I managed to pull a hide-a-bed couch mattress out of hibernation and lay it back there with blankets, pillows and the whole shebang for us to "watch" the movies in comfort. The first feature was (I believe) Indian Jones and the Last Crusade (second I have no idea), but needless to say neither of us remember much of what was up on that screen. Started to drizzle midway through the second feature but we didn't mind all that much. I should have married that girl...

Best drive-in experience of my life.

There was one near my house that converted to FM broadcast back in the 70's and so we used to sit outside the drive-in where we could see the screen and listen over the radio. Had to remember to run the engine now and again or we'd kill the battery.

Got caught sneaking kids in the trunk a couple times. More often than not we got away with it and got a carload in for the price of 2.

When I was small my parents used to let my brother and I lay on the roof of the 55 Buick 4 door with a sleeping bag and watch the movie while they steamed up the windows. Nothing too obvious there, eh?

Can't remember the number of times I streamed up the windows with some Betty.

Small town Saskatchewan back in the day...the drive in was THE place to be on a Friday or Saturday night. Sneaking in the trunk, girls, drinking under age... good times. I still have a speaker from the Starlight drive in to this day. After the movie was over we drove away with it still hanging on the window and never bothered to return it. That must be 40 years ago, long before FM at the drive in was introduced.

I think I was about 16 or 17, every Friday night kids would meet inside the drive in, mostly to socialize and do some drinking, it seemed like some how someone always would find a keg. great times
One night about 8 of us were going, and as usual we had 4 people in the truck of my 1955 Chevy, everything was going just fine until our buddy Tim start freaking out (he was in the trunk) and had to get out right now !!, only trouble was at the same time the security guy was standing behind my car writing down the lisc. plate number (they recorded everyone every night), so Tim starts pounding on the truck and them sticks his arm up through the speaker hole in my package tray, "BUSTED". We all got banned for a whole year.

My car was lost or stolen at the local drive-in in San Pedro, CA. Took this sweetheart to the drive-in had a great time. Took a different gal the following week at the same drive-in and couldn't find my car after going to the snack bar. I had always counted how many rollers back, how many cars left or right to get back to my car.
The second date, I counted the cars from the first date and my car wasn't there. Damn, the bitch stole my car, I walked back to the snack bar and realized what had happened. My date wanted to know way it took me so long going to the snack bar? I 'm sorry, I lost my way. "That's my story and I'm sticking to it.":D

My first child was almost certainly conceived at the local drive in. We were 15, madly in lust and the drive in was the only place we could find some privacy. I didn't even have a drivers license at the time but my dad let me drive anyway...it was 1960 Tennessee after all. We parked my dad's '57 Olds on the back row and made out like crazy in the front seat.

When she became pregnant we were married one month after my 16th birthday. We moved in with my mom and dad and they raised us and our kids all at the same time. Everything I have I owe to them for insisting I stay in school and for looking after us during this period. After graduation I joined the Navy and we were on our own.

We were married 45 years before I lost her to cancer in 2005. Every day I live with the memory of her and those early days.

Had a friend that owned a black lab that would "fetch" Budweiser bottles. He would give the dog an empty bottle and the dog would take it to his wife for an exchange. The three of us went to the drive in with our lawn chairs, the dog and the cooler of Bud. At the end of the movie, the three of us got in the front and the Lab in the back.

At a police drunk stop, the cop asked if we had been drinking, we said nope. He said "well your dog has" and we turned around to see the lab with an empty Bud bottle in her mouth. Cop laughed and told us to go on home.

    Hello,

We were fortunate that we grew up and lived in an area of So Cal that had 4 drive in theaters within driving distance on any given night. The greater Long Beach area had much to offer and 4 drive-in theater locations made for a lot of variety for us teenagers. Much has been written about those drive-in theaters and their locations.
    upload_2022-10-8_4-0-8.png
There were always, 4, with 2 different movies playing within a approximately 10 mile square cruising area. They were located in the 4 different sections of the city. (Northwest, east, south west and south east. They ranged from Belmont Shore in the South to the Bellflower City limits in the Northeast. From the Westside of Long Beach to past the traffic circle in the South east)

But, as those were beginning to phase out, the newly developed neighboring “Big OC” began to show various drive-in theaters to full capacities on the weekends. One of the largest ones was near the freeway in Westminster. It drew tons of kids from the surrounding areas and it was a packed event almost every weekend. But, the place was large enough to accommodate families for a nice night out with the kids. The Highway 39 Drive-In Theater opened in 1955 and drew from a wide variety of places in the OC.
upload_2022-10-8_3-53-11.png the ocean to the upper left

When our son was old enough to go to a drive-in theater, the sound system had changed to a cordless speaker system with wires and clips on the poles. The wires clipped on to the antenna and used the car’s radio to broadcast the sounds. The problem was with our old station wagon, we had a broken radio. So, we had to bring our small portable Am/Fm Cassette Boom Box and hook up the exterior antenna wires.

The latest sound systems use Bluetooth airwaves to connect to the cars’ radios.
    upload_2022-10-8_4-0-31.jpeg
But, back in those early days, some of the newer places in the OC did not have drive-in theaters, but relied on one of the oldest drive-in theaters in San Juan Capistrano. When we used to drive home from our extended surf trips on the freeway at dusk and/or late night, we could see the movie theater from the freeway and was a distraction for all drivers. It was called Mission Drive In, due to the proximity to the Mission San Juan Capistrano.

As the years moved on, the attraction of the outdoor theaters waned. But it did not stop developers from developing industrial areas with wide open spaces into duplex screens and one place actually had 4 giant screens. Soon, even those lost their luster and the properties became too valuable for just opening on the weekends or a small amount of cars during the limited weekday openings.

Now, those are all a part of history, but the need for something different during these pandemic times started a movement for installing portable large screens on various empty lots. It also allowed for modern radio technology for sounds that surpassed the cable metal speaker systems of the old days. The developers have rented the open spaces of large parking areas and places that are empty at night for the movie presentations. YRMV

Last drive-in theatre I went to was the Airline in southwest Oklahoma City before anyone even thought about piping sound into your car's radio. My friend, John Holiday and I, got a gallon jar, filled it with crushed ice, a pint of Everclear, grapefruit juice and some salt. That was the recipe for "Salty Dogs". We took off for the drive-in in my '50 Ford two door, got parked and started drinking. After the movie ended, I fired up the flathead, turned hard right and mowed down half a row of speaker posts. Luckily, we got out of there before the management found out but there were a lot of new door dings on the right side.

Round Up drive in in Scottsdale, AZ. Had been married for about a year, and they had a all-night Clint Eastwood
Hang 'em High special. Went with my brother in law and sister. About 2am. my wife and brother in law decide
they need to use the bathroom. So my sister and I move the car while they are gone. Went a couple rows back
and over. Still laugh together, thinking about them looking around so helpless for the car. Still married after 51 yrs. Fun times.

  29. The Skyway drive-in never dropped their standards, always current m0vies and no porn like the other two here in Anderson, The Fox & The Viking they were the first to close down, I saw the Dirty Dozen, The Graduate & American Graffiti at the Skyway.

The owned kept the parking lot & restroom clean, the snack bar had great food and the drive-in property was finally bought out by Walmart, I had some great times there. HRP

At the 64 Drive in , it was sneaking friends in, under age drinking and playing with the girls….great times!
One night at the Sun Set Drive In I was making good time with this tall, good looking blonde that I met in town. We took a break and started talking, she told me she had a great grand father with the same last name as mine!!! Well we talked a little more and found out we were third cousins!
At least we got to see the last part of the movie and I shook her hand when I took her home!
