I'm running 14" steelies on my 60 Impala. I'd like to improve the stock 4-wheel drum brakes (believe it or not) with front discs. What are the opinions on whether the small size discs that would fit in my rims are going to be sufficient for my big car? Maybe they wouldn't be ideal but I can't help but assume they would be better than the drums that are there. I know drum brakes can be great if adjusted right, etc etc. Nonetheless, discs give a tight feel that would be reassuring.
71--? Nova or 71/72 Chevelle/ Monte Carlo brakes or size brakes will work fine with 14 inch rims but you may have to use a 1/4 or 3/8 spacer to clear drum brake wheels. I ran 14's on my 48 with those brakes for years. That's an 11 inch rotor so a kit that runs 11 inch rotors should work with that size rotor should work. The info you need to do it with stock (parts house or wrecking yard) parts and CPP caliper brackets is here. http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/256131/ This might work a lot better though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-C...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5ae2daeca4 That's one of Scarebird's kits and a lot of guys on here run his stuff http://scarebird.com/

That's a lot of great info. Thanks. Seems like y'all are implying that even the small disc brakes will be an improvement over the drums. Sounds good to me. As requested, a shot of the Chevy and those 14" rims. They're an improvement over what it came with!
To use your stock 14" rims the usual combo is a 78 Monte rotor (10-1/2" diameter) and 1990 Celebrity calipers (2-1/2" piston). The 11" 69-72 rotor will push out the wheel almost 3/4" per side and does require disc rims, as do any S10/GM metric calipered setup. Hope this helps.
Thanks Scarebird. I had forgotten about the disc rim issue. That might have saved me a lot of hassle. I'll have to take off a wheel and see what's going to fit.
I am using the big brake kit from Speedway for a Mustang II on my 40. I have 14 inch steelies on the front. 11 rotors and floating calipers. Works great... I think there is an issue with some steelies and calipers, but old Nova steelie work well.
Stock 1960 14" rims will not clear the calipers on the disc kit unless the kit is for those wheels. Later model (Camaro/Nova/Chevelle) 14" wheels will clear.
