my grandfather died aboard USS Enterprise during that battle,
and you can see it in the video
it was the battle of the eastern solomons.
you can see in the video @2:21 when the bomb hits the port gun placement.

so did 30 some other sailors,
my son found this video online after i told him about his great grandfather,
it is a bit eery to watch, especially having served on a carrier myself.
Robert F Read was my grandfather,

Nick, sorry for your loss. We have to respect those crews. Everybody's life depended on the nerve and accuracy of every other crew member. Nobody wanted to let the mates or buddies down. The Luftwaffe was no pushover enemy, either! The Yanks flew in day (because they had more planes) and lost around 20,000 men. The RAF took the night shift and lost around 10,000 men. Rough goin', for sure! Hitler underestimated the will of the allies to fight through to victory!

Wasn't it Wilfred Owen (or someone in his style) who wrote a short poem on the lot of the ball-turret gunner? Chilling and thought-provoking. I'll try and find it.

I know this is an old photo post - but I saw it and stopped in my tracks.

The last photo of the Chevy dealership in Pompano Beach Florida is the earliest photo I have ever seen of Mays Chevrolet. In 1968 it became Fowlkes Chevrolet. The Fowlkes family lived down the street from we growing up - still good friends. They built a new bigger location in the late 70's, and this was a Jeep dealership last I heard.

I gotta send this to Bob Fowlkes.

 

For context to the SE Florida guys -
The place in the photo is now Accardi Jeep in Pompano
The Chevy dealer was Mays, then Fowlkes, then Fowlkes move to Atlantic Blvd. just west of I-95 . . . which was later sold and became Lou Bacroadt (sp?) Chevrolet (or still was when I bought a new truck there in 2004.

Thanks guys for the feedback. The thing about Ted was that he was one of life's real gentle men - very quiet with a great turn of wit when he wanted to be heard, hardly the hero type but like a lot of Aussies when called upon they just got on with it.
