If you do it while the engine is still in the car, make sure you support the crank if you pull the mains. Do one at a time, but put a bottle jack or something under the crank near the main cap you pull off so that it doesn't sag and influence the plastic gauge reading.

    I agree!

Why the triangular cutout in the flywheel housing at the starter area?

So this is not your everyday roadster.
It is powered by a Model B block and valves overhead.

That looks like a kick in the pants. Can I get a ride in it?:D

What are you using for a trans?

    Thanks Herb,
But I don't see what your talking about. Maybe your seeing the bracket for the motor mount?

    My Bad!

Old eyes said that the uppermost ear for the starter mounting was a piece of flywheel housing missing. Was wondering how you managed to blow up a flywheel without turning the whole flywheel housing into shrapnel.

Eyes need rebuilding also. Must put that on list-----

Hey guys. New to the bangers. I have a 31 a engine. Wondering about milling the head to raise the compression. Is there a good amount I can mill off without having to cut reliefs for the valves. What kind of ratio will I get after doing this. I have a stock head sitting around and wonder if will be worthwhile to mill it or just wait a while and get a aluminum head. Would like to leave it stock looking.

  11. It's not really worth it...those valve chambers are huge, milling 1/8" off the head may get you into the low 5's in compression. I'd save up for an aluminum head.

  12. Unless you happen across a 14.9 head from this side of the pond...

  15. No sweat boss! Keep your eyes peeled for original Cyclone or Winfield heads...they pop up from time to time and usually run around $6-800 - not too terribly much more than some of the repops.

That sounds like a good trade ....... week end for week end?

So is the trans just an in out box?

  17. Dan,

no, the trans is two speed.

It has a small clutch internal to engage the 1st gear and high gear is straight through like a I/O box. The intention was to push off from starting line and just use 1st to pull away from truck, in testing though, I can start from dead stop and accelerate.
Probably the saving grace is that gearbox was designed for 7-800 HP, just a little bit more than the Banger can produce.

As for weekends, no problem, you won't like the fuel in the tank, about 1 gallon of 114 octane for about 2 miles. But it smells soooooooo goooood.
