Watch me try to get my Chopped 32 Fordor done before my twins are born!!!

No it's not really custom. I started out wanting to use 1942 ford niles blue green. It was a one year only color and every time you see it sprayed the color is never the same. The local paint shop matched an original paint chip I had and did me a spray out it was way to drab for me so we started working up the color chart. I narrowed it down to 2 chips I liked and then found this old can of discontinued spray paint color I had and they matched it and it was one of the 2 chips I picked. The code is DuPont gs270. It's single stage which I chose because I figured it would best mimic the quality of paint they could have sprayed in the early 50's. we thinned it down a bunch and made a bunch of passes so it didn't orange peel on me. I'm way happy with it. I didn't want to "fancy" it up just a good shinny traditional period correct paint job.

Beautiful car, beautiful work, beautiful kids. I started on my Deuce mordor when my little girl was born, too. Now she's 35 and I still haven't finished the deuce. So go ahead haters, I'm one of those "I'm going to finish it someday" guys. Work, family, and life just seemed to take priority. But it ain't over till it's over.

 

Stunning effort. I am seriously inspired to get my ass cracking on my mordor. Keep at it and enjoy the little ones.

Thanks everyone for all the love so far. Still getting stuff done. Here's what I did this weekend. Got the wheels and frame blasted and primed. Just chugging along. And I managed to score this super cool early 50's Cromwell helmet that this 74 year old guy sold me. His brother who wore it and drag raced in the 50's handed it down to him as gift when he started dirt track racing. Guy was super rad and had a lot of cool stories. Ill post color pics of wheels and frame when they're painted.

Fronts are 16x4 for a set of 500 Firestone champion deluxe cycle tires.

I have 2 sets for the rear. 16x5 for a set of 750 Firestone blackwalls and 16x4 for a set of those 650 Firestone cheater slick recaps that hurst does. The real skinny ones that squeek bell runs on his sedan.

My goal was to make 3 setups for one build just like the guys did in the early 50's. street, strip, and lakes.

Ok so it's been a minute since I updated the thread bit shit man I had twins and obviously missed the dead line. But that's ok cause I'm still moving along and here are some updates and a pic of my twins.

So I have been bouncing around on my dash insert and as I said in the beginning Chet Herbert's 32 fordor is a huge influence on me so I decided I wanted to run a prewar stewart warner dash like he did. Here's a pic of the way it looked in his car from a 1952 Hop Up article.

So I set out to find one and bought this off the evilbay for $150. Pretty good buy.

Got it here and found out it had crappy black brush paint on it so I knew that the insert it self was coated brass and went to work stripping, breaking down, wet sanding (400,600,1500,2000),polishing, reassembling, fitting the dash, and repolishing one more time.

Also I got that super cool old crash helmet striped by my friend Tuki.

I also found my intake for my nailhead after looking forever. It's getting polished right now. Edmunds 2x4 that I'm running adapter plates on to run 2x2. Also my buddy Tom sold me these really nice early valve covers. I had the breather type ones but I wanted the fireball covers.

I also found 6 super nice original 40 ford standard caps for super cheap. The guy took them off an original car and the other 2 were in the trunk. Here's the worst one of the six. I'm pretty happy with them. And here's a pic of me getting the few pits my wheels did have out.

Now it's on to the garnish moldings so I can make them as nice as the body. In the next coming weeks I'm gonna start making a ton of head way on this old heap and my wife and I finally started getting this "twin" thing under our belts. Check back and ill post more often. What did you use to un-crimp the face of the instrument panel. I have a couple of similar panels but didn't have the guts to take them apart for fear of getting them all distorted in the process.

Thanks man. Ya I got the tech tip from mike and chuck Longley, guys who restored the Henderson roadster. Basically you lay it face down on a big towel on your work bench and get a small way thin flathead screw driver. U only have to pry open 1 long and 1 short side. Basically they told me take my time and work it across three times. 1 start the pry, 2 open the lip to 45 degrees then 3 open it to 90 degrees. U can't pry that small lip right to 90 or it will rip.

I was scared at first the I started and it went easy. Just gotta take your time. Once u get the 2 sides pryed u just push and slide the face and it comes right out.

When putting it back together same deal. Get a real soft rubber hammer or small block of wood and body hammer and start working across the edge. Took me about 4 passes. Got it started folding and kept working it. Didnt want to rush it and rip that little edge.

No guts no glory. Hahaha. Hope this helps. I have another one so maybe ill take a shit ton of pics and do a tech on it. If so ill shoot ya a link.

Soooo I made some progress on stuff today. I have been working on making my wheels ready for paint and today was the day.

Here's the pics through the process. One I already posted so sorry for that. Filling pits. High build, sand, wet sand,final prep, and COLOR. The first couple color look a little brown but the last one when I took them in my buddies shop is a better depiction of the true color. 1942 Moselle maroon.

Also my original front spreader bar was pitted up with a few pretty good size dents in it and bent to shit as I'm assuming someone got a tow on it at some point in its life. So I went to heating it up and worked the dents out with a long pipe then heated the whole center section and leveled the thing back out using a straight edge to make sure it was straight. Then to high build and sanding. Now it's ready for some shiny black stuff.

And now for the bad. So I sprayed my tank the other day and started to see these small areas on the reveal start to lift. I stopped where I was at and figured I must not have prepped good enough and whatnot. So I let it dry and went to popping the bubbles.

Well when I got the tank it had this almost rubberized black paint on the outside but it was straight so I scuffed and sanded it way down instead of blasting. Big mistake. Look at this SHIT brazed patch with 2 inches/6 layers off bondo on it and a million pinholes along the reveal. Bummed but whatever. Just gotta find a new tank now. Not risking things cause my family is gonna be in this thing.

Cool build. Did you decide fenders or not? Cherish those kids, they grow up so dam quick.

 

Trying to get some original 32 shocks broke down so i can get them rebuilt. If Chet Herbert can run them in his Fordor at bonneville they're good enough for me. Cheers guys.

So got a bit done today.

Got the tires mounted. Got my tie rod ends, pedal pads,32 front shock arms, and cowl vent handles blasted and primed and got a little bit to do to them before shiny black. Also started breaking my brakes down to get them ready for paint. Then I moved my frame up to my front garage so I can finish weld some stuff and do final mock up before body work and paint.

I also got all my exterior handles and center strip back from the polisher. They looked worse than my window cranks when I sent them out.

I'll post more pics as I keep moving.
