Folks Of Interest George Jones RIP

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Scotch Buzzard King, Apr 26, 2013.

  1. Just heard the news that George Jones, aka "The Possum", died today. He's one of the last country greats that came from the same era as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard. I know this might be OT, but honestly how many of yall fixed one of your old beaters over the years with George Jones playing on the radio behind you? May he rest in peace. Whose going to fill his shoes?

One of my all time heros, I hope this thread doesnt get closed or at least not that quickly....... This song was written by Dickey Lee & Steve Duffy but NO ONE could have made it a hit like the Possum.

One of the greatest voices in music, any kind of music, period.

There are more gone then there are left. Merle, Charlie Daniels, Hank Jr., and Willie by my count are all we have left.

    RIP George

Thats Just heartbreaking, I am going to have to pop in the ol 8 track, break the seal on a bottle of jack, And mourn.....LOL. If you want to talk about "traditional" Ol george is about as "traditional" as they Come!...We seen him down at the state fair one year, Hecould barely stand up on the stage, But he sang better than On the radio.

Back in the 60's, in a little wide spot in the road one horse town in Missouri, a car pulled in to our local burger joint.
A bunch of us were hanging out in the parking lot that evening waiting for something to happen.
A guy gets out of the car & goes in to order, while a couple more stayed in the car.
One of my high school buddies was a total George fan boy & he says, "that's George Jones, there in that car" & went over to see.
Guy rolls down the window & my friend says "You're George Jones, aren't you"?
Guy in the car, in a slightly slurred voice says, "that's right, sonny. Here have a beer", proceeded to chat with him & sing for him acepella till the other guy came out with their order & they drove on down the road.

    RIP, George.

Sad day indeed. Also sad that it will probably take someting like this to have a resurgance in his music. I'll be listening.

  25. Singing with out accompaniment is actually a two-word Italian equivalent which is actually 'A cappella'.

Did Barny Fife do a rendition of that o the Andy Griffith show? :D HRP

Terrible news! Everyone young and old likes a George jones song, it's sad to hear he passed.

  27. Hank Jr. is a bit of a stretch. He was, little more than, a squirt of jizz when the others were established stars. Not to diminish his talent, but he rode in on their, and his dad's, shirttails

George was an "instant classic". "She Thinks I Still Care", "He Stopped Loving Her Today", "A Picture Of Me"...tugged at your heart and went straight to your soul.

"Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes", says it all.

    R.I.P., George...and my personal thanks.
