http://www.sportscardigest.com/cars-for-sale/featured-listing-1932-ford-hi-boy-roadster/ Given the build price and recent other auctions anyone wat to take a guess on the sale price?
"Spencer had designed the car and begun building it when he passed away in 1995, and Darrell Brunn put it away for the next ten years before selling it to Kirk White. It was then acquired by Florida collector Dennis Higginbotham, who delivered it to Pete Chapouris of Pete and Jake’s Hot Rod Parts and SoCal Speed Shop fame, who finished the car at a cost of $1.3 million. It took a dedicated three man team working full-time fifteen entire months, but the money spent and hard work seem to have really paid off. The finished product looks to be a hot rod at its best." I must be reading this all wrong. 1.3 MILLION ? Confused in Cleveland, Dale
Probaly won't go at all at the price expected......More than likely wont find another fool with more than the original amount ,that is interested .
If this guy spent 1.3 million dollars finishing a car that Doane started, then I suspect there was not much to begin with. The provenance seems weak. I'm not saying that he didn't own it, just that advertising it as a Doane Spencer car is like selling a Model T and saying it once belonged to Henry Ford
This absolutely was Doane's car and there is plenty of evidence that proves the provenance. And it was further along than you might think.
Whether this belonged to Spencer or not, it has no soul. I wouldn't give you more than the sum of its parts for it.
Yup. Great writeup in SRM a few years back. There many one-off machined parts on this car, some of which were not completed when Doane passed. It was more than a bolt it together and paint sort of thing.
I'll say no where near what he has in it!! Hell, I think the ORIGINAL Doane Spencer car would be tough to break $1,000,000.
Seems a lot like the "Homage" rock bands touring with one member who was associated with the original band...
An awkward '50s Olds concept car sold for 3.2M and the Batmobile sold for 4.2M. I think the Doane Spencer car stands a pretty good chance at fetching 1M, if it were ever offered.
Three guys times 15 months could total 9000 man hours times $100, leaves 400K for parts and materials.
I've seen the original and I wouldn't pay a million for that one. Some people have a lot of money and I can see this going for a high price.
I agree. It's a nice street rod and all but I would walk right past it at a car show. The IFS up front blows.
How in the world can there be 9000 man hours in a car ? How could there be 4500 ? And @ 100.00 an hour they better be producing and if they are producing its extremely hard to see 2000 man hours
Mecum auction. Won't get near the reserve. I'll never understand why anyone would put that much money in a car, might be super trick but...
the whole theme of this car is silly and the cost foolish--- Street Rodder Fodder shop built in modern times...
You could spend $1.3 Milion on the restoration of a lot of Classic cars, and not get your investment back. Spending money is good for the economy, someone spent $4.4 for a Babe Ruth uniform, it had no effect on my life. People making and spending their money isn't a problem. Bob
