Just got a bunch of vintage drag racing photos dropped off at my office by Ed Crowder, who ran the Kil-Kare Raceway between Dayton and Xenia, Ohio for many years. He is helping me, along with Paul Frost, in organizing a cool Vintage Racing Exhibit during the CARS & PARTS SPRINGFIELD SWAP MEET, coming up in May. One of the coolest old photos featured a line-up of Willys gassers. It bears the caption: "Muncie DragWay, 1963." I figured it belonged on this thread. Hope it isn't something you've all seen before.

I have that Muncie Dragway photo but mine was too big to scan and share. Glad you posted it, its always been one of my fav's. Lots of old Willys gassers were around these parts back then.

It never occurred to me, when I was a kid watching Paul Frost and Jeff Gray in their Willys coupes at Kil Kare Raceway near Dayton, Ohio, how rare and valuable those cars would be some day.

I am hopeful that our first-ever Vintage Racing Exhibit at the spring swap meet will cause folks to dig through their attics and closets to find more old photos, trophies, and other memorabilia to be shared with the whole world. There were quite a few Willys gassers in this immediate area at one time.

Kirby was a talented craftsman. He built more than a few fast AA/GS here on the West coast, both chassis and motor.

Previous partner Mike Moore, is now in Oakridge, Oregon. This truck ran in SoCal and Texas, was sold, found, and restored. Still powered by a blown 310" SBC, it is one of those that is run, WITHOUT DIFFICULTY, on the street with mechanical fuel injection.

Well, point in fact, when Muncie celebrated their 50th anniversary, we did in fact have this many. Problem was, it rained....no it POURED for 2 days (it hadn't rained for 6 weeks prior to that) and we couldn't get enough dry time to recreate the photo.

  26. Chuck,
Don't know if you were there or not, but at one of the Willys Home Run gatherings in NY, we were at Lancaster Speedway, and had about a dozen coupes parked like that. A thunderstorm came through with very heavy rain, and we all jumped into our cars. I was with Jeff Laska, and he had glued his windows in. Twenty minutes later we all got out and the rest of the coupes had a driver with a wet left pant leg, and a passenger with a wet right pant leg. Jeff and I were dry, and that was when I decided to glue my windows in the coupe...hasn't leaked since.
