That is a Chevy accessory wheel. Quite rare and very desirable. That one looks to be in decent shape - many that you find have all or most of the bakelite/plastic gone from the wheel rim. Depending on the price of the car, it might be worth buying it just to get the steering wheel. Thor
It was offered as an option in the 40s but only for a brief time (6 months?) because people were breaking their wrists with them when they would hit a large bump. At least thats the story I heard.
Yep. The lowrider guys love them and will pay stupid money for them. If you can get the car for reasonable money ($2500 or so), a trip out here to the Pomona swap meet with that wheel will get most of your investment back.
In the early '50s my Dad had a '41 Chevy sedan with one of these wheels. Only one I ever saw "in the flesh"..........only others were in pics. rare find, no doubt. Ray
My uncle "George" had a '40 two door sedan that had one and as a little boy during WW11,my cousin and I would play with it. You could hear the ball bearings in it as it was spun! The car also had some sort of bumper guard that had to be lowered to clear the trunk handle in order to open the trunk.Funny that I can remember that, but not my cell phone number! Must be getting old!!
That's a 1940 Chevrolet accessory steering wheel ,1941 is different it actually has the spinner on the bottom instead of the side and is worth more.
Saw one online a few weeks ago for $1500.00 that was recast and rechromed. Spinner was on the side on that one.
