Does anyone know how to correct runout on steel wheels?? I have a set of early Ford steelies that have a visible amount of runout in the center section when you give them a spin. I have had balancing issues and the last guy to look at them told me to just replace them. The wheels are in really good condtion and I hate to buy another set that may also have the center wobble. Is this pretty common with the early two piece rims?
There is wobble, which I have corrected in AL wheels. (Apply a Urethane mallet) I don't see why a judicious (just enough of a) whack, wouldn't straighten a steel wheel. If it instead had radial runout (nuttin ta do w/bias, guys!) different story, but I suspect this would be unlikely.
I tend to agree, if the center section is bent your done Have a shop ith a hunter spin balancer with digital readout spin them. They can tell you if the wheels are toast. Out of 8 wheels I either bought or were given i had 4 that were keepers.
Try searching olds threads, I'm pretty sure this has been discussed. A few guys posted pictures of presses used to straighten steel wheels, It can be done.
The wheels dont show any signs of an impact or abuse. The center section and the outside rim look as if they were riveted with the runout (wobble) from the beginning?? I am just wondering if this is a common problem and if there is a fix. Thanks for any advice. I did a quick search (4-5 pages) hope Im not missing the obvious.
