Steering Wheel Violently Shakes, Metal Shavings in Power Steering Reservoir

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tattedkat, Apr 4, 2013.

  1. Rack Gone Bad? Anyone had or know of a Problem like this? Buddys been doing Racks a Long time. He said hes never seen this. 40 Chevy. 350 GM Motor and PS Pump. Mustang II Front End. Getting Car Ready to Run. Car front end jacked up. Motor Running. We just adjusted the ujoints on the steering column. We go to check the steering wheel by turning it. It starts rotating back and forth with alot of force. So much so that we could not grab the wheel and control it. We noticed a PS rack leak and then noticed Metal shavings inside the PS pump reservoir when we started disassembling. We are assuming its a Rack gone bad. If the PS pump was shot, it would be loose, noisy, or just not working. What are your thoughts?

Definately hoses reversed. Shavings are a separate problem.

Besides what the 2 previous stated....

The shake, or "death wobble" can also be caused by over sized tires and play in the steering system. It is very common on 4x4 with a steering stabilizer bad.... Just incase the hoes aren't it, this might give you a direction

  5. Since all they did was start it, not drive it, this can't possibly be the cause :D

    Hoses are definitely plumbed backwards

  6. An out of work mechanic buddy of mine put them on. He might have put them backwards. The Metal shavings I was told by a Rack rebuilder said can be caused by the valve inside the rack being shot?

Tatkat, I'm just glad this happened while the car was jacked up in the shop and not while going down the interstate.

  8. True. Is it worth it to see if this racks still useable, or just buy a new one?
