they could also be a early v.w some of them had a wide five type pattern , but most had a release for the spoke area
Quite possibly house trailer wheels. Other trailer wheels I've seen are 14.5" so you can't put passenger car tires on them. Bob
Custom made. The centers would typically be used in a 15" wheel for racing. A lot of steel wheels used the same size center, they just had more "drop" to the rim section if they were 15s. Midget wheels would be 13" or smaller.
Not sprint or midget. They use a 6 on 5 pattern and use drive pins not lug studs or nuts. Doubtful they were used on a modified or stock car as 15" tires would have been typical on those.
VW had a different bolt circle than wide 5. House trailer are close to wide 5 spacing but not exact. Assuming those have the Ford wide 5 bolt circle I'll say they are fabricated. Like someone else posted, you could use the same centers in 15 or 14" rims.
The give away are the rivets. note that both the center and the outer shell have them. This was popular swap or build from 64 to maybe 74. This combo is a 57 ford outer shell and a 38 ford center. The dia on the ford wheel where the center section is removed is the same as a buick.
My uncle has an old homemade boat trailer My great grandfather made in the late 50's, with a ford front axle. It has the same rims. (edit) similar rims
That is what I was thinking and the centers don't look anything like the wide five wheels I have at home.
Yup. 14" were the hip size of the times. Those are kind of Period Correct for those early chopped & channeled V8 ratrods
Absolutely correct.^^^^^ They could have been used on a sportsman class sprinter, or they also could have been used on a dune buggy. I think the wide 5 pattern on the early porsche and volks wagon wheel was the same as the Ford.
I dunno, I think it might still be a racing rim, possibly homemade/modified from others. It would have been a good rim to run on the left front in dirt racing, it lets you steer left easier and quicker. My '33 Ford stock car had a homemade 13" rim on a (stock) wide 5 Ford drum, so that's where I'm coming from...
Wide 5 Ford is 10 1/4 bolt circle. The old VW was a tad over 8" I've been around dirt racing 50 years. Seldom saw 14" wheels on a dirt car. Some wide 5 wheels will fit some old tractors like the Ford 9n but I don't think 14" wheels will clear the tractor hubs.
Years ago a lot of the sportsman round track cars cars had to race with treaded tires. No racing slicks allowed...The 14 had a wider foot print and were short. Those old flatheads were short on power so to have a 90 inch 15 inch tire verses a 14 that was 83 inches the 14 worked a lot better. This also made the car closer to the ground. Good on paved tracks..One last thing you could find and buy those 14 inch bucron tire quicker and cheaper..
