Kolb destine to win 69 Indy as Prudhomme's motor blew in the semis and no time to swap back up. But alas, rain came down, postponing the top fuel finals the following day before a sparse crowd.

Frank did run an Enderle in the end. I think he and fellow lo-bucker Joe Winter teamed up for awhile.

I first thought it was Green Valley, with the trees, but don't remember orange trees near the track...but it could be, the photo had no caption, but it was with a collection from Pomona...

  9. I grew up just a couple miles from Pomona and it just doesn't look right. Seems like there were a set of R/R tracks at this end...
Brackett Field was off to left (of picture) and La Verne would be a couple miles north.

I dont think its Pomona either. I grew up in adjacent Chino and passed through the area countless times. The logistics you wrote are more accurate. Off to the other side is the fairgrounds proper and the golf course at then end.

Car won a few meets at Fontana when it first debuted. But it was always hindered by the weight of the body work.

I can't say for sure that it's Pomona, but if it is, I think it is in the pits, towards the southwest fence...here are a couple of early Pomona pictures from Don Ewald's site, note the orange trees in the background, don't remember any orange trees at Green Valley...

OCIR had trees like that too, but those don't look like Calif license plates

  21. The license plate on that Dodge isn't a California plate, either. I would think that, even though it look's pretty hazy, you would be able to see the outline of the Sierra Madre mountains in the background.

If those are orange trees, it won't be the valley. Orange trees don't do well in North Texas.
What trees there were at the Valley were hardwoods.

Here is the restoration in Pat Foster's Shop, 2006.
Paul's son, P. B. Candies is firing up the cackle car at Pomona Winternationals, 2010. This car & body was built by Wayne Ewing and painted by Arty Ross of Baton Rouge. Presently, Paul & I have the only two cackle cars in Louisiana. There are several others being built. 3-25-2013 . . . Glenn - in Louisiana

Glenn, thanks to both you and Rick Finch for identifying the Candies & Wales fueler, I kept staring at the pictures but it never came to me until you all made the ID...hope more LA cars make the cackle scene, lots of famous fuelers from there, including some classics earlier in this thread, showing racing at Pel State Raceway...
