If you had a time machine and money?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by borderboy1971, Mar 26, 2013.

  1. I'm not sure this is really an appropriate question for a hot rod site or not, so delete it if need be.

If you could go back in time and had a REASONABLE amount of money to spend at a dealership. What would you buy? Not for investment purpose, but just because you'd have loved to own that particular car. Examples: a dual quad 62 belair, or a max wedge dodge, or a Buick woody wagon or..... etc. When I say REASONABLE - I mean not a sky is the limit type deal to go back and buy a Duesenberg or Silver Ghost Rolls Royce.... those weren't for a typical person.

  2. I would just make my grandpa order his Ford truck he bought new with 4x4 instead of 2x4. I know...real exciting.

I'd go back and buy Tommy Ivo's bucket when he put it up for sale and come back happy.

  9. There was an old "Twilight Zone" episode about this back in the 60s-70s. The guy went back in time and bought a new black or washington blue deuce roadster. Don't remember if he got it back to his time.

Back then you had to actually had to make your own parts. No 1-800-sendparts. No HAMB to bitch about how you ordered parts at 5 p.m. Monday and they didn't arrive by 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. No Harbor Freight to buy Chinese crap. The one advantage I can see is that no matter what you did it would be "period correct".

Back to 1974 and buy the 63 split window for 1200 bucks that no bank would lend me... "1200 hundred dollars for an eleven year old car is too much money and not a wise investment" said the wise old bank manager...

In the forties and early fifties you could buy a Silver Ghost Rolls Royce or Duesenberg for a couple of hundred bucks. I heard of one guy who had a chance to buy a Silver Ghost touring in 1935 for $50 bucks. It needed a clutch job. He couldn't raise the 50 and it ended up scrapped.

I keep thinking of some of the used cars I turned down. 1949 Jaguar Mark V convertible for $250. Full fendered 32 Ford coupe with 283 and Corvair front suspension $600. Perfect original 1940 Willys coupe $500. 30s Rolls Royce 20/25 sedan, Model T touring, Model T center door sedan, package deal $3500. 28 Willys Knight sedan with moss green mohair interior, $350. These were all between 1968 and 1975.
