i have a 39 lpymouth with stock frontend. the steering box is worn out . anyone have one? does anybody know what year boxes interchange or if ther is a modern box that i can easily adapt? . thanks .. low budget beater rod.
The steering boxes and columns for all the Mopar cars look about the same from the early 30 through about 54. I would think most any from at least 39-48 would interchange. The column is part of the steering box. I suspect anything modern would require modification and fabrication to work, in which case I would go to a rack & pinion steering. The center mount inner tie rod racks from the 90s Cavaliers work well on this era Plymouth. There have been several posts about this setup here on the HAMB. Do a search for the Cavalier steering rack, ro look under posts I've made. I did a Cav rack on a 39 Plymouth business coupe a few years ago, complete with pictures. Gene
i have a steering box out of a '61 dodge lancer. it wont work for me because my car is rear steer. thought it might work for you. sorry. cross steer boxes that do come close are: early mustang, second gen. corvette and first gen. camaro. chassis eng. sells an adapter to bolt a camaro box to a '35-'40 ford frame. may be close to your frame. dont know if any of this is any help. gene.
I have one if you are still looking. Approx. 40k miles, nice and tight. Pm maybe we can come up with something. Jon
