Yeah, no B.S.! Lost my first one in the divorce; "Thank God and Greyhound she's GONE!!" Said I would NEVER build another one, thing of it is, this is about the only way I can afford a decent trailer. I'm a Class A truck driver and do local L.T.L. freight work. This thing was sitting at one of our accounts; they had taken delivery of a new metal forming/stamping machine. It was delivered on this skid; roughly 12' by 22'. Lots of channel, square tube, etc. These people had been trying to get rid of it, too much work to cut up and scrap. Lose money on that! I asked, they were very anxious to be rid of it! The price was right!! LOL!! They let me come up and cut it into 3 sections and I had a roll-back haul it home. For about 125.00 I've got the makings of a car trailer! I'll add pics soon, still having some 'puter issues! Been working on it, it's completely trimmed. I've bought used M. H. axles and the spring mounting kit and a coupler! At this point I've still spent less than 400.00 bucks! Won't be fancy, but who cares! ATTENTION K-Mart Shoppers; Post # 19 has the pictures, Barnyard is my son, he has a better 'puter than his poor old decrepit dad!! ; (
Well, she didn't specifically want it, she just forced me in to bankruptcy, so I had to sell it! No more broads!! LOL!!
Well, don't forget "Rosie Red-Palm"!! LOL!! I'm sure the girls down your way would be better, I have Southern roots and prefer Southern females!! Hey, maybe we can start the H.A.M.B. Dating Section!! LOL!! I'm heading out the door now, got some torch work to do and my goal is to have the axles mounted today!! Yee-Haw!!
Bwahaha ... IMO the ugliest sheep looks better than any guy! I too would like to see the build ... make sure your sitting down when you price axles, springs and electric brakes.
Off to chase parts; O-rings for my torch mostly! Already have the axles, they had springs attached and brakes! $150.00 for the pair and they are the right width!
He got it from a metal stamping plant. Check different manufactures in the industrial area. They gave us this one because a lot of scrappers don't even want to take it because it's too much work and gas to cut it up. How's the weather over there? -Burton, Fairlane Mike's creation.
I might add another way to build one, and I very seriously considered this, would be to take part of the floor section of a semi trailer; a van would be my choice because it's not hard to find a salvage one. Sometimes scrap yards take vans for scrap, and they are hard to take apart. But if a guy used a gas powered cut-off saw, I think you could get a chunk like that without costing too much. A better situation would be to buy a whole trailer, but who has that kind of room? Just sayin'!
You're right, 62, I've heard little stories, but I will check it all out. But speaking from experience, most D.O.T. crap is directed at the big trucks! Deep pockets, most of it is to raise revenue! In 12 years of driving semis, I've only been pulled over twice, once right after September 11th, 2001, a little security check by the Saline County, Kansas Sheriff's Dept., and once over a bad "running" light on my truck. Warning citation on the light. So here I am up at the "crack of ridiculous", planning my day!! Trailer should have it's "feet" (axles), on today and I will cut the material for the tongue! Pics coming soon, I'm still having some 'puter issues!! Ttyl!! Mike! P.S., the friggin' weather looks like it will be gorgeous today; 55 degrees, sunny, Yee-Haw!!
Sounds like the start of a nice trailer. I once found an old aluminum radar screen that was made very strong and the size was just about what I needed for a kart racing trailer. I purchased the axles, wheels, fenders and put it all together and then built the enclosure for the entire thing and it worked for years. It was light weight and easy to pull. Jimbo
Made a little progress yesterday, had some delays, but will concentrate on cutting out another chunk of the skid for tongue material. Pics will probably have to wait til the weekend. I haven't arc welded too much in recent years; I prefer doing stuff like this with a D.C. machine, but I thought I might use this Lincoln A. C. unit, any input on the rod that works the best? Thanks, Mike.
Welllllll, I'm B-A-C-K, big as life and twice as ugly!! Bwah, ha, ha, ha!! Friggin' 'puter farted on Thursday, just now fixed it!! Fired the GEEK; who needs him??!! Bwah, ha, ha, ha!! Pics are coming guys, still a novice at postin' em! Might have to re-hire the GEEK for that!! LOL!! Have made good progress; the tongue is in place and almost completely welded on, along with the coupler!! If time and weather permit, I'll tackle the axles; welding the perches on and pulling 2 leaves from the spring packs! Definitely too many leaves!! I should be ready to "flip" this baby over sometime this week. She'll be on her "feet"!! Stay Tuned!! Mike. ATTENTION, K-Mart Shoppers, the following Post, (#19), are the pics of MY trailer! Barnyard is my "child", (Hell, he's 2 inches taller and 55 pounds heavier), so check it out!!
Busy week ahead, I managed to buy a "utility" trailer at an auction Sat., for less than scrap price! With a little work, it's usable, I can relax a little from this one, but I need a trailer now! My goal is to have my "skid" trailer usable in 2 weeks. But don't change that channel, I'll be sneaking in and burning up some rod here and there!! Bwah, ha, ha, ha!!!! UPDATE, UPDATE; The ABOVE Post, # 19 is my trailer! Barnyard is my kid, he had to post these, he's about 23,649 times faster than I!! ; )
Well meanwhile back at the ranch!! Cold windy day, (Yeah it's Kansas, LOL!!), my abused new trailer is working out, but I'll do some work on the big one over the weekend!! Mike.
That's a cool build. Scrappers didn't want it cause they didn't want to pay to haul it away! Don't know about Kansas, but in Ohio you don't need a title if its under 4,000 pounds. Title it as home built.
Yeah, 1960, I did my first one as a "home-built", I think the weight break here is 2500 lbs gross. But I know a lot of guys around here don't do anything about tagging or titles! I mean it's friggin' Kansas, been here almost all my life! Sometimes I hate to admit that!! Depending on the weather,(friggin' Kansas), I may burn up some rod this weekend! How's the weather your way??
A little off-subject; BUT if we freeze and die, then we aren't good little HAMBers any more!! At that point it would be the Hoaky Ass Mortician Board!! "You Stab 'Em, We Slab 'Em!! Subject; Home-built wood stoves. I'm experimenting with a slightly different drum stove, it's in the "prototype" stage! LOL!! Seriously, I think I have about 38 cents in this thing, and it works real good! The 38 cents I'm donating to Jerry to help him with his "Giant Speedster" build, check his car out, very creative!! Just askin'! Mike!
Here I am, (talking to myself?), LOL, too dang cold right now, winter front. I'm sittin' here next to the H.A.M.B. friendly wood stove!! Toasty warm!! You guys in the South, send up some HEAT!! LOL!!
Please "manyolcars", look at Post # 19, I couldn't get the pictures to download at my 'puter, so my kid did it for me! We were eating delicious soup while downloading! I'll be waiting patiently for your heart-felt apology!! Sincerely, Fairlane Mike of Snotsville, Kansas, America!
Hummmmm, guess I'm still waitin' on that apology from #26!! LMOBO!! It's winter again, nasty crap. I'll resume work on this thing soon!!
