The Merc is a nice looking old car for sure, it is a shame that it is not flat black like all the other cars from that era.

What makes you think all the other cars of that era were flat black??

Most likely long gone. Just for fun I ran the plate on the car I drove in high school (1995) and it doesnt come back to anything. Would be awsome if you could. My grandfather was in Korea.

I also think it would be later than May '53. Your Dad looks way saltier than a new recruit. This guy's got some rocks in his boot soles. Check out the perfectly bloused jump boots and the jaunty old c**t cap. Definitely a Vet and a very cool dude.

  5. my uncle was in korea........ awesome video, really cool congrats on getting the truck back and restoring it......

Thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it

I was wondering about the Merc pic and Dads boots/pants being bloused, the pic in front of the gate he's wearing regular shoes.

Well I did get a little information from the Camp Roberts museum curator.
It is a all volunteer staff there. The historical pics are not searchable by computer yet. He's is also interested in my Dad's Merc pic and said as time permits they will search to see if the Merc is in any other pics.

The curator stated that the buildings in the back ground are not Barracks but maybe admin buildings or mess halls around the eastern or western edge of the parade field.

The curator also asked if he could use the pics for display at the museum. Of course I said yes and would be honored.

    Thanks

instead of scanning the picture my wife was able to use her digital camera and snapped a pic, and we got a better look at the plaque under the plate. Its diffidently a base plate, not a club plaque as I initially thought.

The merc was a So Cal car in 53 or 55

    Thanks

    Quiúbole, Tavo!
That is distinctively a 1950 Mercury coupe (two-door sedan).
The trunk insignia medallion is '50,
& the rear window is one piece
(some late production ‘49’s did have this rear window style),
    ‘49’s have three pieces.
    Not particularly customized…yet,
    slightly lowered,
with a crushed tail pipe from bottoming out…
The extra stamped metal plate is a Camp Roberts
    base-issued license plate
for distinguishing civilian cars while stationed on-base.
Your Father is a swingin’ machín,
& that adorable son of yours
is a chip off the ol’ chock!

Thanks for the information on the Merc

Special thanks to Michelley, she will be showing Jesse Lopez the pic of the Merc. He was at Camp Roberts a few years earlier.

I did enhance the licence plate and can make out the tag as 53

Didn't anybody else pick up on the smiley at the end of that post?

I will keep an eye out for the Merc here in Korea. dont think I will have much luck though I havent seen anything older than 1985 here and they are all Kia's and Hyandai's. :( Korea is not for Hotrodders.

When my cousin Ronny Parker came home from Korea, he bought a '50 Merc. He lowered it with 2 or 3" blocks, dual exhausts, flare skirts, original paint: a light pea green.
My cousins lived out on the West side of Santa Clara valley, had a prune ranch on Saratoga Rd.
That pic took me right back to Saratoga Rd., post Korea...Reminded me of some of those old black-and-white films.

A picture from before. Slowly, it becomes hazy...then focuses in on the movie, and suddenly the audience is whisked away to a previous time when everything seemed better...
