Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flowmeister, May 16, 2012.

  1. You can do just about anything you want with one of these stub nose trucks, 30 years ago no one wanted them, now every one wants one, LOL.

When do you think you will have it on the road? I really like what you have done so far.

  7. Thanks man!
I am targeting spring of 2014.
The plan is we have a little convoy (3) of COE's from here
    to the Lone Star Roundup.

That would be something to see. Good luck with the finish date I hope you make it.

  9. Yeah Seth, we gotta do it!
We will have to work out details when it gets closer.

  10. Ok, little update.
Despite all the things I got on the go right now, I said damn it all,
this weekend is all about the COE.
I decided to try and get the firewall issues crossed off my metalwork list.
Included in that is broken spot welds, torn and previously repaired and re torn metal,
bent metal around the pass side side cowl vent, multiple holes on the firewall, etc...

The broken spot welds were drilled through one thickness, clamped, and button welded with the mig. The torn metal and anywhere I had to put a piece of metal in was welded with the tig. The bolt size holes on the firewall were done with the mig as well with a piece of copper backing it.
I welded up a total of 26 holes on the upper firewall, the lower part will get attention tomorrow, I have already spent some time welding up holes on it, but have to dig it out of the cab and see what has to be done yet.
I also have to make a piece to go in the inner cowl vent lip.

Sunday will be all about grinding welds and some hammer and dolly work.
I will post a pic of the completed thing.

The squares of rust in the pics are where there was a piece about 4" that runs vertical.
All the spotwelds on it were broken and the inner lip was cut and bent over.
they will get sandblasted and re installed.

All the trucks I get seem to have had a hard working life with many make do repairs along the way. Now we make it all right.

    Attached Files:

  11. Two of the bigger holes were from a heater that was rigid mounted
to the firewall by the pipes, that caused stress on the metal and there were cracks to weld also.
Once heat was in the panel, a few more cracks exposed themselves,
In retrospect, I probably should have just cut out a bigger area and done one patch,
but already headed down that trail, I just welded the cracks with the tig.

That sounds like a good plan to meet up at the LSR. I'm going to have to get off my lazy ass and get mine going and just maybe I can be there to.

You may have more than one finished by then.
A mass gathering of COE's at LSR 2014,
I like the sound of that!

  18. For a moment I thought your cab got the chickenpox. LOL. It seems to be coming along nicely. Can't wait to see you sitting low in the seat, hanging your arm out the window, cruzzzzen.
You have been a big inspiration, keeping me going on my project.

thanks man put my intro up. and ill have pics up in the next day or so.

  21. Thanks guys and glad my project is providing inspiration for others.

    Here is a wee update.
The firewall for all intents can be crossed off my metalwork list.
I still need to grind and dress the button welds on the side brace pieces.
The torn out metal on the side vent has been repaired also.
Seems like almost every part of this cab has suffered some major trauma at one time, so the list of repairs is a long one. Bit by bit, it's all forward progress.
Here's a few before and after pics.

Next is fabricating 4 new cage plates for the door hinges, I will put up pictures of those when they are done.

The plan for '2014 is at least 3 COE's from Calgary area heading to Austin for the LSR
    More COE's the better!

    Nice work!

  24. Looking good. Nice to see an update.

  25. Thanks Tantank49, Seth and K13!

I did see that thread about the remote shifter, in my mind I pictured something very similar to that. It doesn't need to be complicated to work well. Kind of the keep it simple thing.

Here is about the best picture I have of the engine mounts I built.
    Hope it helps you out.

I need to get some fire under my butt!
Trying to get a couple other things done before I head to LSRU this year as an observer.
so the COE hasn't seen much love the last couple weeks.
Still my plan to drive it there next year!

Oh, your firewall brings back memories. I welded up a gazillion holes on my 41 Pickup firewall, just before I sold it. Seems like it took forever. Keep up the good work and keep posting pictures!
