The movie was Howard Hughes' "The Conqueror." Details about the suspected effects on many of the cast and crew are on the Wikipedia write-up for the movie (considered Wayne's worst-cast role, BTW. Maybe, in more ways than one, eh?)

Thanks to the State Library of New South Wales, via FlickR, here's a cool promo photo I don't
think has been on Dog's thread before. Famed record-setting bike racer Hubert Opperman poses
with a '36 REO Speed Wagon:) of the Peters Ice Cream concern, July 19, 1938. Snapped by one
Sam Hood. The racing bike is pretty keen for the 1930s. Malvern Star/BSA with state of the
art, for 1938, features, including tube tires, drop handlebars and derailleur, etc.

    Sir Huber "Oppy" Opperman, thanks
    to the Melbourne Herald Sun.

I think it is an Olds near the bottom with the oval grille looking like it is screaming for help. LOL

Not to downplay the radiation issue at all, but John Wayne was also a chain smoker which didn't help.

It is hard to believe that the govt. did it on purpose. Maybe the wind just changed direction?

  6. They started Nuclear testing underground. There are suppose to be some hot spots around Tonapha, Nevada too. I do not thinks I will buy a house in St. George.

Bikini Island was another test site and soldiers were sent to witness the Nuclear bombs with only sunglasses. The government still runs experiments on citizens and this administration will be the biggest threat to US citizens.

read the part of this post where they state the wind ROUTINELY blew radio active dust over this town. They knew in advance where the fall out would hit they just did not know what long term affects it would have. same with having troops out near the blast then immediately after marching them out through the blast zone. I did not know that we had Canadian troops as part of the blast testing then even the papers I read did not mention Canadaian taking part. John Wayne beat lung cancer he died of stomach cancer.

It would have been non routine if the wind had not been out of the west!

The last picture is not a 32 Kiloton blast. Looks like a test of a smaller artillery round.

The photo in swi66's post 68647, showing a Corvair with the garage door broken, reminds me of a true story about my first Corvair, a '65 Monza.

One day the gates on my parents' driveway were closed, so I just nosed up to them, parked it, and went on in the house. About a hour later, Dad asked for the keys and said he wanted to use it to go to the store. I told him OK, but be careful because sometimes finding Reverse was tricky. He said, "I was driving floorshifts before you were born," so I just shrugged and then went over to the kitchen window to watch.

He got in, started the engine, fooled with the shift lever, popped the clutch, and promptly knocked the gates down. Then he came back in and told me to go to the store.

Yeah, that's a Green Gretsch DoubleAnniversary#6118. The Monkees likely had a deal with Gretsch as they were often pictured with them in the TV shows. Like Paul McCartney, Jimi was able to play a "strung-right" guitar. Not like George Harrison who is seen struggling with Paul's "strung-left" Epiphone Casino

Uh, looks like this thread is becoming a bit off topic regarding the various atomic tests. This can easily lead to opinions that are basically political. Let's be careful.

I also remember that the back seat had no seatbelts, and if mom slammed on the brakes, the seatback would smush us up against the front seats.

  24. I admit they are my favorites too. I have a ginormous file of camping and trailer images (not all are vintage so I don't post them here). I'm a early member of Sisters on the Fly (#23), and grew up camping and sailing big boats, so come by it honestly. We even have a few of your country women as sister members also ~ http://www.sistersonthefly.com/
