Projects Well it's OFFICIAL!! 1950 Mercury ready for paint!

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by Leadsled612, Mar 8, 2013.

  1. Well it's been a long haul of endless metal fabrication, body filling, sanding, body filling, more sanding, sanding, and sanding....then 3 coats of 2k PRIMER and then block party started. Finally an additional 3 more wet coats of 2K primer just to follow with more sanding and vacuuming and cleaning...etc!
I am having test panels shot next week of various paint samples...Halleluiah!

Congrats. Now for the hard part: picking a color. What are the options that you are considering?

so whats the color going to be?

  7. Like Henry Ford stated, "Anyone can have a car painted in any color he wants so long as it is black"

Might be going with Barrett Jackson's hot rod black with gloss black flames front to rear.

is "barrett jacksons hot rod black" satin black?
all that hard work for paint that would look good over bad bodywork?

Keep it simple with a nice coat of gloss black. Cant go wrong IMO

The hard yards in the ground work will pay-off with whatever paint you go with, but gloss would be nice.

  14. I am torn with the satin vs. gloss black finish ,however the Mercury below is so tastefully done as far as flames and contrasting colors.

Looking killer. I also like the matt black gloss flames. But gloss black looks sick as too. Decisions decisions.

Again it's your sled, but I would avoid flames, and satin anything. (Bad Bob's is the only exception to this rule). It will date your sled as a 2007-2012 build. If you want your body mods to stand out, consider a lighter color; it will make your merc pop. Dark colors are overdone (including my sled) :)

I know how you feel man. Just shot color on mine. Its like the sanding part never ends. I would go gloss if it were me, but its your car. I was torn between the satin or the gloss to because I hate waxing a car. After putting in all of that time and material to get it straight, I couldn't paint it with a satin color because the body deserved better than that.

We painted my son's Camaro in semi gloss black, and it is a lot harder to keep clean. I wouldn't do it again.
Love your car, I would want to paint it something that is timeless. There are still a pile of Easter egg pastel street rods running around that looked cool for 4 seconds 20 years ago.

love those cars, in satins, gloss or metallic's

  27. Nice car. I agree with the others that say the satin/gloss graphics thing is a fad that is already starting to fade (thankfully) and will definitely date your car quickly. A solid gloss color will be timeless.

  28. Paint it any color you want...as long as its black!!!
