Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by lowrodderchev, Mar 8, 2013.

  1. hey fellas while cruising the selma auto parts meet i scored some 1956 california plates for my 57 chevy truck. Bad thing they have 1961 registration tags on them from what i was told if your putting them on 57 vechile they have to have a 57 reg. tag. i called the DMV about what i could do but no one knows. so figured i'd ask my fellow hambers. anyone know if i can or were to get ahold of the 57 tag. really hoping to run these plates. thanx guys

As I understand it, yes, you have to have 57 tags on the plate to run it on a 57 car.

See a guy at swap meets that sells them along with plates etc. Seems like he is at the meet in Sac and up at Hot August Nights also.

  3. I know you called the dmv, but see if you can go in and talk about YOM plates with a specialist.
Most likely you will have to fill out a form to transfer the plates before you get the window and find out what you are looking for. Sucks for the hassle but at least you will know. I have YOM plates and thats how it went for me. Good luck with it.

  4. i got that part just didnt know if i could buy some randon 57 registration sticker off ebay and run it or are the numbers on the sticker something i need to worry about.

  5. yeah thats probabaly what i need to do. i filled out my paper work already just hadnt gone in yet. just heard about the registration sicker B.S. from a buddy.

  6. I would think all states that have a year of manufacture license plate laws state that your tag has to be issued the same year your car was made. HRP

  7. Find out first if the plates are assigned to any car, a call to the DMV will verify. If they are clear, then you need to buy a '57 sticker, ebay, swap meet wherever. The numbers don't matter. Then, take the plates, sticker and title to the DMV window and they will assign them to your car for a transfer fee. You'll pay a little more yearly on the registration too, kinda like personalized plates but not as much.

I bought a sticker for $40 at the Goodguys Pleasanton show last year for black plates for my vette.

After 56, Calif. started to use a sticker that had the month and year and then in 63 when they switched to black plates then they went with a sticker for the month and a sticker for the year.
Most likely, you won't be able to use the 56 plates on your 57. You would have to get the black plates. But the DMV is currently taking orders for new Yellow, Black, and Blue plates that can be registered to any car or truck. The catch is there has to be a minimum number of orders for each plate (I think it's 700) in order for the DMV to produce them.

  9. plates are cleared. found a guy has a original sticker for $50 (DAM) also another guy that makes them for $20 (more like it) but i didnt know if the numbers on the bottom of the sticker mattered. the ones the guy makes say 001957 on the bottom

In '57 California was using a metal tag to affix to the upper corner of the plate. Many license plate restorers probably have a lead for you. I have a set of '59's that are black with yellow numbers.

Don't worry about the small numbers on the sticker -- just replace the 61 sticker (silver on red) with a 57 sticker (black on red).

  13. cool thats the best news ive heard all day thanx Fenders

  14. Yup numbers on the bottom don't mean anything to the dmv. Sounds like you covered all the bases, it's $15 a year extra for the YOM plates.

  15. tach a few more dollars on the already large bill california charges us for tags LOL

  16. As usual some good info , some bad info and some wrong info. 57 was the first year they stopped using the metal tags to identify the next year. There was no month sticker, back then all registrations were due at the first of the year, the monthly thing came much later. This is a proper 57 California plate and the way you need to present it to DMV. The little numbers on the bottom of the sticker do mean something to DMV, but not on plates this old anymore.

  17. Exactly right. For my '58 sticker I had a single old plate with multiple stickers on it from '57 through '62. I very carefully peeled off each sticker until I got down to the '58 sticker I needed then I carefully peeled it off and using a special double sided 3M tape, I put it on my other plate. No problems with the DMV.

Maybe you can find a single munched rear plate for cheap and do the same thing. Count the layers of stickers first though. If the plate was issued after '57 it won't have the sticker you're looking for.

Does your plate still have all of the old stickers stacked up under the '61? I used a hair dryer and carefully peeled them back to '60 on mine.

  22. I actually pulled the 62 on top cause I seen red and it turned out to be 61 tags

  23. ok found a guy on evilbay that has re pop stickers that guarantees 100% they are ok through the DMV so i'll find out when i get them keep you guys posted just in case anyone else has to deal with this

  24. Yes you can, but I would pass on the ones that all say 0001957 because they are blatantly fake.
No one ever said that being cool with hot rods is Cheap

  25. Don't know if laws have changed in the last few years but in 2010 I put YOM plates on my 56 with 62 stickers on them, no problems. Just took them to the DMV to be checked and yes, there is the extra fee for the YOM plates each year.

  26. to late i jump the gun and bought some. couldnt stand that $150 siiting on my tool box

  27. on the DMV website it says "if your tags say 58 they need to be on a 58 vehicle if it says 61 they need to be on a 61"

  28. Man, I don't know how you slid by with that but you got lucky. The DMV code specifically states that the sticker must be the same year as the car.

What about the fact that you are putting them on a truck? When I registered mine they told me if they were not commercial plates I couldnt even put a spare tire or bag of groceries in the back of the truck. Not sure if it applies to YOM plates but I would check because the other thing you may catch hell from law enforcement pulling you over for not knowing that you can use a non commercial plate on a truck as long as you understand you cant use it as a truck anymore. Some people use this as a loophole for cheaper registration but dont realize how bad it can actually be.
