  6. Those rims are only 4.5" wide????

  7. If that 215/70 works on a 4-1/2" rim that's great !
    But I found this :
    Summit Racing Part Number:COK-579762
    Tire Size:215/70-15
    Wheel Diameter:15 in.
    Sidewall Style:Redline
    Tire Construction:Radial
    Tire Diameter:26.90 in.
    Section Width:8.70 in.
    Tread Width:6.40 in.
    Minimum Recommended Wheel Width:5.50 in.
    Maximum Recommended Wheel Width:7.50 in.

And now I'm scared:eek: well not really but more like this:confused:

  8. Little different size but I had a 6.50 on a 4 1/2 rim but where 16's, noticeable sidewall bulge.

Yup. I may be wrong on the size, they may be a 75 series I'm at work and can't check. They fit fine and have a slight bulge but not crazy. I wanted close to a 28" tall tire. 205's would be a better fit.

Are you talking radials or bias plys? If bias plys, Coker has a 670-15 Firestone, for example, that is 28.58 high & says a 4.5" rim is acceptable. When you jump to 710-15, which is a tad taller, the minimum wheel width jumps to 5." Whether you can cheat on this, I'm not sure. Is the "cheating" in the gray area between 670-15 & 710-15 a safety thing or a looks thing? Do radials generally follow the same wheel parameters as the bias plys? I see that in April, Diamondback Tires is coming out with a new "piecrust" radial called the "Auburn" & one of the introductory sizes is supposed to be 710-15. I'd be diggin' a 28" tall piecrust radial that fits on a 4.5 rim. But, can a 4.5 rim be used?

    Vicky,
I like this website for comparing wheel and tire size combinations, backspace, height, width, and it lets you do 2 comparisons at the same time for front and rear calculation.

    rimsntires.com /specs.jsp
-on the left, click on "size comparer"

My rear tires are a little over 26 inches tall, and the fronts are a little over 24 inches.

If you look in my photo albums, my wheel and tire combo is
Front TTD 4.5x15 with bias Coker Pro-trac 5.60x15's
It is close to a 195/60R15 - also close to Bobwop's opinion.

If you are interested in radials, Butch M's gasser is in an album there, and may give you some more to think about. I think his are Kumho's.

  15. Tire shops frown on anything bigger than a 165/80.

My buddy has set up several dozen sets of 4" rims with 205/75 and has had no trouble in 40 years. He mounts his own.
MT tires are 28x7 and work on 4"-5.5" rim.
Greg has a nice pic of 215/75 and that looks damn good on a 4.5" rim.

I have a similar question to the OP – my car was produced to run 600-16 tires mounted on 4.5" wheels. I'm updating the whole vehicle and ideally I'd like to mount a 195/80 R16 on the 4.5" wheel, but everyone involved (the tire people and the wheel people) tells me you can't mount 195's on a wheel that narrow:

    • Coker Tire says the range for a 4.5" wheel is 145-175, and the range for a 6" wheel is 205-235.
    • Bridgestone lists 5.5-6.5" wheels as the suitable range for their 195 tires.
    • Yokohama lists 5-6.5" wheels as the suitable range for their 195 tires.

However, the internet is filled with people who put 195, 205, 215, and even 225s on a 4.5" wheel, which makes me wonder why car enthusiasts think it's okay to go against the manufacturer's published limits? Is it safe?

I really, really want to put this tire/wheel combo together, so can you guys explain your thinking to me, please, and make me (and the OP) feel okay about bending the rules?

My car weighs 1,500lbs, would be a daily driver, and probably wouldn't get over 60mph.

    Tire:

    Thanks very much.

  17. I studied my buddy's 205/75/15 on 4x15" rims the other day.
Visually they appear to be made for each other. Very good look to it.
The 165/80/15 looks damn dinky .

Dunstan, I won't pretend to be a professional tire guy but I think the reason the manufacturers are so conservative with tire size to recommended rim width has a lot to do with tire wear. If your tire is too wide(within reason) it will wear more in the center. If the rim is too wide for the tire it just won't fit right and will probably wear the outsides uneven. It would also depend on the sidewall height also a taller sidewall is a little more forgiving on a narrower tire.

The reason I went with a 215/75 is because of the height and I couldn't find a 195/80, the reason I have a 4.5" front rim is because the style Torque Thrust that came in a 5" didn't have the correct size and backspacing for my Coronet....whew that was long winded

Had 15x4's on a drag car. Ran F & G 78's. Also ran Firestone drag front runners 8.45x15. Had a street car with 15x4's. Ran 205 & 215's on that.
