1950 chevy gasser, 427ci.

Hey Jimbo, I have owned the car for 29 yrs. It had been a car known around our area for a long time. Seems as though I do a little work to it and then get side tracked and start doing something else. I hope to get it back together soon.

a gasser that "gets it" looks like a fine build. not goofy six feet off the ground kind but a tasty purpose built car with the right engine. love it

 

Sweet build what headers are those? 55 Chevy fender well headers?

 

Not really sure what the headers are, I ran into a guy out north of town and he said he had the headers that were on the car back in 1971, he sold them to me for 75.00. I was happy to get them.

 

The 400hp version didn't have tri power. The tri power 427 was either 425hp, or 435hp in the Corvette.

Great find on a '68 427! Those are pretty rare in any configuration, and always a good find! I've got a '69 427 in my OT '71. They make lots of power and torque, yet run so well on the street.

 

In all due respect BB427, the 400 horse version is a tri-power, it just has hydraulic lifters instead of solids like the 435 version.

 

'67/'68 oval port, hyd cam 3x2 was rated @ 400. the 4bbl hyd cam 427 was 390, not the 3x2. None of the 3x2 were rated at 425, that was the 4 bbl L-72. The solid lifter L-35 3x2 was rated @ 435. Word was the L-72 actually made more power than the L-35.

edit: sorry, wrong RPO on the 3x2 solid lifter, should be L-71. premature senility...

Man I hope you gear it for cruising. Race cars spend way too much time standing still. A few 10 second drives and you are done till next Sunday. It looks great. Drive it.

 

We are up to our eyeballs here in Kansas with this snow. Went down to the garage today, I thought I would update a few pictures of the engine. I have been gathering parts for a while and its starting to come together! Bought a flywheel today so I hope to find clutch and 4-speed soon. It's kinda the fun part so I wanted to share with you all, Tim.

Definitely looking cool! As for a transmission, if I remember correctly you can get a Richmond Gear 5 speed set up so the first 4 gears are for racing but 5th brings it down to a streetable level. I agree with CJS, its more fun if you can drive it all week and race it on Sunday. This trans might do the trick.

Having a little more fun now, A friend and I Got the 427 and the 4-spd in the fifty chevy over the fourth of july weekend. It is a 1969 corvette 400 hp. Having a 427 in it back in the day. It seemed like it would have crawled back in there by itself, it went that smooth, Had to make a rear crossmember at the transmission. Went with a hydraulic clutch that you can adjust without having to remove the tranny and bell housing. The Offenhouiser manifild and the headers are the ones that were on the car back in the day. Can"t wait to get it going again.

 

Looks great! Man those rear tires are sure tucked in at the rear! Are they what you're running, or will it get wider tires?

 

Thanks, The M&H Racemasters are what is on it, I will run them for a while as that what was on it when it was raced at Lawrence Dragway in the early 70's, but yes, there is room for bigger tires.

I have one of those 427 400 blocks I've thought about bolting together too.
Have you ever thought of running a Lakewood bell on that bad ass puppy?
That ol 427 will spin up pretty high, hate to see something come thru the floor.

Your probally right. I was kinda stuck on a orig. 621 bell housing. The hydraulic clutch was designed for the lakewood bell housing so we had to do some modifications on the bracket. Looking forward to Salina.
