  2. I think the 41-48's are the last gasp of the deco art movement. 1949-50 saw a whole new design movement into what is called Streamline. Clothes changed, albeit ever so subtly, architectural, mechanical, everything changed in an effort to put an ugly past behind us.
Art experts will disagree with me on the time line, but the movement really started after the war. We had an ugly depression, and a devastating world war to get over.
One of the things I really like about the post war-pre 49 Fords is the almost "cartoonish" proportions of the bodies. That and the liberal use of chrome and stainless that kept increasing over the years of the 50's-early 60's. justmyarrogentopinion.....

Henry Ford was indeed big into soybean derived "plastics" and composites. Many of the plastic interior bits, such as dash knobs, window crank knobs of the late 30's / early 40's were made of these materials. He also experimented with paints , using some of those ingredients.

I just got my coupe back from One Day Paint yesterday.
Now the fun begins putting it all together without scratching the paint.

Keeping the 41 thread going! I've been working on this for few years, hoping to be road worthy this summer.

  11. One Day Paint...Is that kind of like a Maaco? If so, that's a damn fine paint job from here!

I bought a very clean '41 Super Deluxe short-door coupe in 1961, put a hot flattie in it and enjoyed it for a couple of years. Unfortunately the only pictures I ever took are 35mm slides, and I haven't worked out how to load them into the computer.

I saw this coupe at Goodguys Del Mar this year, and thought it was the best '41 I've ever seen:

I read a book about the work of Bob Gregorie (Edsel's design chief) and Edsel Ford, and was surprised to read that Gregorie thought the '41 was a much better design than the '39. He skipped over the '40 with hardly a word on the subject.

I thought the 1941 was the ugly duckling of the era of Fords. Of course I wound up with one, a woodie wagon. I really wanted an earlier car, '37, '38, or may favorite, a '39. I thought about selling the '41, but it started to grow on me. Of course all woodies are pretty in my opinion. What did it for me was an old publicity shot of a fighter pilot next to his plane with a '41 convertible near by. I had an "ah ha" moment when I realized the weird front end styling was an attempt to capture the flavor of the air intakes of a fighter plane. Being a pre-war car I started getting a new appreciation for it. Still would rather have a '37, '38 or '39 though!

The 41 has a lot in common with a 58 Chevy. Both are beautiful cars in their own right but unfortunately they followed automotive legends, the 40 Ford and the 57 Chevy.

No they are not underappreciated by many. I have a 1939 and a 1941 Ford.
