Got to snoop around the car a bit today before I had to go out for the evening (Not work this time, celebrating valentine's day with the beau early). I noticed there's a bungee cord on the engine? It runs well and starts right up, no problems driving but I think that there's a bit of a mess inside the engine right now. I think the air breather is going the wrong way..? It's facing in towards the windshield. Found my VIN, decoded all of my information and it was a big help to know all that in case the previous owners changed anything up. The trunk has it's original mat in the back, as well as some of the few spare parts we got with it. I noticed there's a bit of a burn mark on the headliner? Could that have been a wire issue? The package tray is warped a bit because of the sun. I know this isn't really hitting any of the major issues I need to work on right now, but these are what I have noticed on my own tonight, with just a few minutes to really look it over. It's snowing now and the poor thing's outside. Hopefully it won't be bad out tomorrow and I can get out there and test all of the tips I have been sent. I can't thank you enough for all the advice coming in. It's such a help, any tip or hint. You guys are all awesome

Here's the VIN plate I forgot to add. And my interesting set of keys. Sparkly rhinestone lanyard from my mom, real lucky rabbit's foot from my dad. It's that perfect mixture of both parents haha

First, we must examine why you bought this particular car: i think it's impractical for you and your "dad." But let's examine this aspect first.

Put down the measuring tape and zip up, C10. This is a family place.

    Madi-

You're posting your pics to facebook, You would need to open that part of your profile up to the world - and I don't think that's a good idea. Grab yourself a google picasa account (or whichever picture hosting site you like best) and repost your photos there. :)

    I'd love to see pictures.

It wasn't your decision to buy the car, and I didn't ask if you thought it was impractical. It's a project to work on that will instill quality bonding between Father and Daughter. The way you put quotations around the word dad is just straight up rude. How about we examine how inappropriate your comment on this post was? Do me a favor and butt out pal. Your "input" is not needed.

Ok, i don't mean to be rude. Just curious; You're a teenager, but you're not in school at this hour?

    Thanks.

Horse patties. You're not being "curious"...more like disrespectfully skeptical. In my experience, those who are unnecessarily suspicious...putting others under the microscope for no good reason...are usually full of bs themselves. Show some respect.

Best to ignore 'im, Madiketch. I hope you feel better.

That car looks awesome!! Regarding the smoke smell, I've heard if you open a can of coffee and set it on the floor, it will absorb smells. I haven't ever tried it, but it's worth a shot. Good luck with it!

Looks pretty good! The smoke smell is probably your exhaust leak, and fixing that is what will solve it. Please don't drive it until you do! I'm begging ya, carbon monoxide poisoning is nothing to mess with - trust me on that one! The other is if the oil hasn't been changed in years and has broken down it too can give a nasty smell underhood from a condition called "blow-by". Change the oil out if you don't know how old it is and it might get better. Please don't play with an exhaust leak though...

Don't worry, it's the cigarette smell I am concerned about, not fumes or other smokes! The guy who owned it before me smoked like a chimney and the car smells a bit like an ash tray...

I don't think there is much you can do about the smoke other than just clean the crap out of it and let time and nature do the rest. When you start wiping, you might be shocked at how much brown stuff comes off. Might change the color of the interior a bit - by seeing the real actual colors.

You might try spraying some actual deodorizer cleaner all around. Not the stuff that just covers the smell with another smell made from toxic waste products. You need to use an oder neutralizer. I think Zep or some similar companies make it. Can try a pet store or hardware store if you don't already have some around the house.

  23. You go girl ! If anybody questions your interest in working on your car , tell them an old grease monkey said "Why not ?!" .
Another good site for Falcon information is www.falconearlybirds.com which is limited to RoundBody falcons [1960-'63 1/2] , it is slower paced than TFFN but I figure the more ideas the better . Both of those keep a "family friendly" atmosphere . You can find me on both .
The Falcon Club of America website - http://www.falconclub.com/ - has some good information but is not an interactive , "social" type site . There is an FCA chapter in your town , the contact info is in the North Central Chapters section .

I've been restoring an antique desk for our craftsman bungalow the last week or so that came out of a house where they chain smoked endlessly, and I have been using Lysol All purpose cleaner with a lemon scent on it and it has worked very well. As Stude Trucks said above, don't be shocked at how much brown gunk comes off. Even on this small wood desk where I have had to spray it on and wipe of quickly before it penetrates the wood i have gone through a whole roll of paper towels to get the mung off.

    Hi Madi,

Glad to see you got the pics to work. What a great little car you have there!

    Regarding the cigarette smell...

as a former smoker, I can tell you that the butts themselves carry a whole bunch of stink. Get them out of the car as soon as you can as well as any ashes and that will give you a big head start to getting rid of the smell.

The smoke film is going to contribute, and it's likely in every nook and cranny - may take years to completely air out and will probably still occassionally come back on a hot day if you're sensitive to the scent. The sooner you can thoroughly clean the inside out, the better.

That Febreeze stuff can help too. Best to use after a good cleaning.

Just finished reading through this thread, and I have to say that it looks like you picked up a great first project! The burn mark on the headliner could very well be wiring related (can't imagine anyone holding a cigarette that close to the headliner for that long), probably due to the rodent issue. If when working on the car, there happens to be a bit of grumbling or more colorful language, it's part and parcel of the process. Don't take it personally. Never use compression fittings on brake lines (just saying). Enjoy the time with the family, these will be memories that last.

Beautiful reply, nicely worded. You get an 'A' today!

  30. It just occurred to me about the mouse infestation . Mice can carry some not so nice germs which they can leave behind in their droppings . Until the interior is cleaned up , wear a mask and impervious [rubber , nitrile] gloves , use a lot of antiseptic spray and change clothes and have a quick shower after you're through .
