fact 289, orig 3 on the tree, but someone put 4 on the floor, fact air cond, was going to put later 302 but this year 289 only has 5 bolts for the bell housing...thanks ford....so the stock motor was rebuilt
Nothing wrong with the 5 bolt 289. I have 2 and 2 260,s that have them. If you have the bellhousing to work with, then you are ok. Thats a great car----rides like a car is supposed to ride!
I agree with the kracker here. The early 260/289s were alright and as long as you have the bell you are golden. You could at a later date even bolt a toploader 4 speed to it if you really wanted the extra gear. That car is sweet, looks like it is straight as a string. it is just screaming for mid-night blue metalic.
Extremely nice looking car,,the fastback Fords of this era might just be the sexiest style ever produced. And as Beano said it looks straighter than a string! HRP
That 5-bolt 289 is actually valuable to the right Mustang/Fairlane/Comet people, and could help pay for an FE- I happen to have of couple of 390's, one out of a '63 Bird and the other a '64 Gal, that have all the original pulleys, manifolds and such still on them
I love those cars... put a ton of miles on one much like that when I was in high school. Did you cut coils and put lowering blocks on yours? Malcolm
Nice looking car, Flyn. Looks like you've got the stance just right. What are your plans for it? Are you painting it or just rolling it like it is for a while?
X2, your 64 runs around 4200#. I think it would be a lot more fun to drive with a stout 390 and they are still pretty easy to come by and an easy swap. Nice score. Mike
Don't cha jus love those big back seats. Oh that was 50 yrs. ago...Didn't ya jus love those big back seats....
A favorite uncle had a '64, white/red w/390 when I was 11-12 and it DID haul ass! One of my favorite Fords other than 32-40's.
Regretfully, I just sold my 64 with a 428. I knew I would never get around to finishing it since I bought back my 32 coupe and I have 3 other projects ahead of it. Those were the best looking and driving cars of the 60s in my opinion. I have had two of them. If it doesn't have power brakes, you might want to find a booster, those original brakes sucked in my opinion.
The weakest link is indeed the standard drum brakes- my 406 car has the big 3" police/taxi/HP drums, and they are plenty strong, but my ragtop has the standard small drums, and definitely needs help.
