Can you get rear end ratio from VIN?

Found a Gen 2 F Body parts car to steal a rear end from. The snow was too deep and I was too lazy to crawl underneath it yesterday to see if it had a tag.

Is it possible to pull the rear end ratio off the VIN?

    Thanks Fellas!!

Something that old, I wouldn't trust it even if I could get the ratio from the VIN.

No you cant, but if you trust that its still stock check the gearing for that car during that model year, and it will give you an idea.

Isn't it on the data plate on the door? Fords have them listed there, not sure about GM.
My '64 Falcon has the axle gears listed there.

Look under the rear seat. May find the "build sheet" with the rear-end ratio on it. DD

  7. Should have a code stamped on the axle tube. Not as convenient as the vin but its there. Or, as stated research what ratio the exact combo the car has and that'll get you about 95% there. Remember to check for ac as a lot of cars had a steeper ratio with air than w/o.

'86 is a third generation F body. You said second generation. ;)

One that recent, there's a fair chance you can write down the VIN and call a dealership. Or, if you find the RPO sticker, look for the "G" codes. GT4, GT5, GU6, etc. G80 means it has/had posi-trac.

You're missing 1 digit from the VIN.

    Coach,
I just logged onto Dealer Globac Connect and the vin is no longer supported by GM. Grab the "G" codes on the glove box sticker and we can help.

a easy way to check. A lot easier to do with 2 people. If non posi ie open spider gears. Mark the drive shaft position. then mark the wheel position. rotate the wheel 2 turns and count the number of revolutions of the drive shaft,, 2 and 3/4 equal to 2.75 2 and a half 2.50 if it goes a little past just do a good guess like 2 and around 7 oclock pos is a 2.56 so I hope you get the idea of what I mean.. Now on posi you only need to turn the wheel 1 time.. I hope this helps.. Bobby..
