What was your first speed equipment part?

A Hurst shifter for the Muncie 4 speed in my 55 Chevy. I remember the box sitting in my bedroom until I got it installed. I was only 16 at the time so I was pretty excited to be buying speed parts for my first project!

 

I lived a long way from town, so I usually made what I could. But I DID save up and get a chrome " foot" gas pedal... '74 or so

 

Pair of 43mm Weber sidedraft carbs on a four barrel adaptor. Put them on my 34 Ford Truck.

 

My first was a Man-a-Fre assembly for a small block Chevy, then shortly after, a set of Hooker headers.

The Man-a-Fre was second hand but unused and the headers were new. I got them both pretty cheaply considering their condition. The headers came to me thru one of the employes deal (not back door !) prices.

Schiefer aluminum flywheel for an FE for a dirt car I was building. Bought it at Winner's Circle Speed and Custom. Counter guys argued whether it was pronounced Shifer or Shafer.
A few years before my Dad had remodeled their store when I was about 12. I was helping him finish up a few things the night before the grand opening. I was putting trim around the counter and somehow tripped the silent alarm. Cops came running in with guns drawn. The rat bastards that worked at the store pointed at me.

 

One of those 10 pound Accel Super coils on a 70 Dodge Challenger RT in 79.

 

Me too on the sparkomatic floor shifter went in my 53 merc with a 292 in it

 

Used a Torker 1 SBC intake. Still have it on my V8 Vega, New a set of Harland Sharp roller Rockers. $159.00.

 

Pretty sure mine was a Brodix dual plane intake manifold for my sbc-powered slightly OT car, soon followed by a Holley carb. Still got it and the car 16 years later.

 

Mine was from the junk yard. A four barrel intake and carb for my 272 in my 55 ford.

 

Gauges (oil pressure, temp, etc) because more gauges just like that summit sticker on the firewall make extra horsepower.

Next was a Trans rebuild kit for my 727 trans. All that extra horsepower and the trans just could not take it....it was the stickers not the years of neglect for the previous owner or the neutral drops that did it in

My first "speed" part was a Duntov 30-30 cam for my old '57 Chevy in 1968!

 

When I was maybe, 10 years old, I bought a tri-power set-up for a flathead. Three 97's on an unremembered manifold for a whopping $7.50. I sold the set-up a month later for an unheard of amount of $25.00. I was RICH and a swapper was born.....

 

custom dual exhaust and 2 carb. intake manifold with 2 new carbs. - back in mid 50s. for a 54 ford 239ci yb ohv v/8.

 

A new k and n air filter when I was 16 in 1996 and flipping the aircleaner lid upside down on my 87 Monte Carlo ss. Boy did I notice the increase in HP! Lol

 

Dual quad intake for my 401 Nailhead. $200 out of some guy's garage. Just had to drive to Houston to get it.

 

I was given a 331 hemi block, crank and rods by a buddy, but no heads. Kept it for a couple of years and traded for some Crestline 15x4 wheels. Sweet.

One night when I was a kid and my buddies and I were cruising Woodward. We were in my '63 Dodge 330 four door sedan and we ran across another kid who had a '63 Polara two door hardtop. We both had a 383. Mine was a two barrel and his was a four barrel. I lamented about having such a boat and was wishing out loud that it was the other way around. All of a sudden he says, "Why not?" I have been wanting to save fuel". We went directly to the parts store and went to my house and traded manifolds and carbs straight across. So, I guess the first "speed equipment" part was the gasket set I used to make my tires burn for a 1/2 block!

 

In 1967, I bought a Y-block 2x4 intake and carbs supposedly from a T-Bird out of a junk yard. Can't remember the price but couldn't have been more than $50. I put it on my 57 Ford Skyliner. I could never get it to idle right. Also purchased a pair of exhaust cutouts from J.C. Whitney for it and redline port-a-walls.

 

Edelbrock F4B single 4bbl small block Ford aluminum hi-rise manifold. Purchased from Tennessee Speed Sport in Nashville, Tn. around 1969. They have since moved out from the downtown area to Goodlettsville, Tn. and are still very much in business.

Fenton floor shifter for 3 speed from a Comet and a 260 v8 I set into a 61 Falcon - 1968 Missoula Montana - jaxx

 

Had to be a Cal Custom or Mr Gasket open element air cleaner for my '63 Galaxie 260 in the spring of '79; otherwise the Spark-O-Matic 3-on-the-floor from K-mart for my old man's '71 Ford pickup in the summer of '78.

 

Ford C3AZ-6250-AA (63 427 solid lifters) cam to install in my 352 PI for my 58 Ford... I was warned off the C4 version as I was told it would be overkill on the smaller motor... LOL! .500" lift, with 306 duration... wicked lope. Even came up with a set of the 'cutaway' one-piece lightweight lifters. Bought a set of racing springs with those new-fangled aluminum retainers, also on advice (good advice! LOL!!!). Motor would rev to 7K, but exploding generators was the next weak link....

 

A set of wheels but I had to give them up they wasn't His they were His Brothers
