[FONT=&quot]Carl Heap who although extremely sick with cancer pushed the Pheonix, a 1943 International K-7 truck, to a record of 272.685 mph. I was lucky enough to be at Bonneville in 2003 and met Carl a wonderful man. I also saw the record breaking run. Unfortunately Carl passed away before he could run again.[/FONT]

i only know what i have read--never been there when the cars were there never will be--it seems to me that these individuals are all heroes for there creativeness,there desire to win,there determination,etc--all done to meet their own goals --the name on breedloves car said it best---that said all stand in MICKEY'S shadow

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Bob Higbee. Really nice gentlemen and I can think of no one more dedicated to the sport in general, and driver safety in particular.

The motorcycle rider had his clothes blown off during the first run so he returned to the Pit area, changed into a bathing suit and sneakers and did a world record at Bonneville years ago. He earned the title, "Worlds Fastest Indian." But it had a Vincent Vee-twin as the power plant.

I have great respect, for everyone who has built up a racer they truey felt would go really fast and have a chance of setting a record.

Craig Breedlove, especially after the comment he made when he sunk the Spirit Of America. I can't remember exactly how it was worded, but he said that as he was going airborne heading for the lake, "Great, afer all this I'm going to drown"......

the famous film of breedlove coming out of the car after he rode it into the settlement pond was shot the day after the crash.

notice how dry he and his suit are when he's making his remarks.

I remeber hearing of him relating his thoughts of "now I'm going to drown" in a later interview.

What I remember him saying in the footage you mention is "and for my next trick I'll set myself on fire" or something very close to that.

Still, with the difficulty he had getting it stopped, it's at least semi miraculous he wasn't seriously injured, if not killed in that incident.
