Yo, that ol' piece o junk is finally starting to shape up...keep the pics coming.

  2. Looking great, as other posters have mentioned... dig the dirt track influence.
In your first two posts on this thread there's a couple of shots of a '35/'36 Coupe in the background... any info on that ? In the early '90s I had a fenderless & channeled '35 Coupe to which was an old Chch rod from the '60s. Last we know of it went south and has disappeared now for many years. The styling is very similar, although it's in the dark/background, just a long shot...

Are you still after the tea strainers? Have you tried Tulmac in Levin? Contact Greame Tulloch (06) 368 2202. They're carby specialists so they might have something to suit.

That pic was at Rusty Acres in Nelson, don't know if Steve has still got it or not, last time we connected - 12 months or so ago, he was selling up a whole lot of stuff though...;)

Been toiling away getting the trans all trued up ready to mount, ran into a little snag - the scattershield clocked up within tolerance east/west but 30 odd thou out the other way - solution - make a pair of offset dowels and correct it... man is it good having a lathe handy, there are so many times you just need a little spacer or want to flush off a cut. Had to scoot down the road and pick through a fellow petrol heads buggery bin to find a suitable piece of hard steel - pin from a digger bucket - that'll do it! All sorted and sits perfect, well - within 0.0025" anyway, which is within spec. Now I've found another small hurdle - the Quartermaster release bearing doesn't fit with a twin plate clutch - shiiiiit! ah well "problems are only solutions waiting to be found" some wise arse cracks as he finishes your last beer and disappears into the sunset with no idea or solution.... while I ponder a solution I'm going to assemble the front end......

Got a bit more done, found a solution to the throw out bearing - Howe part # 82870 is the magic fix, and I found one in a speed shop within a days frieght. So now I have the gearbox all mounted up, driveshaft in place - which was ordered a year ago with measurements from a mock up. A good feeling when something actually fits perfect from your theoretical measurement from the past... In the pics you can see the torque arm which is correct length for the cars wheelbase and wieght distribution and can be altered to suit track conditions, also see the "J Bar" for diff location which can also be adjusted to control side bite or rear roll centre.

Started to assemble front end, got axle soft mounted in the vice, put bat wings in place, heaved on the 15/16" spanner to wind up the tapers to hold those things in place and PING! the perch nut flies one way the washer another and I'm thinking W T F is goin on here... well after I pick up the peices it becomes evident some body further back in history for some reason WELDED studs to the perches???? Man am I glad it happened in the shop, check this out

While the body is off the chassis there are a few jobs that will be easier to do now rather than later. Like set the pedals in the right static position, attach return springs, and make adjustable pedal stops. Results show below...

Started on the fuel tank retaining straps, today - the draught has broken meaning the water tank is being filled and hoprfully the earth is being rehydrated, it also means garage time! I install waterproofing membranes so rainy days can be a blessing when youv'e got a car waiting for you in the workshop.

Finished fabricating the fuel tank straps, lots of marking & drilling to get the race car look - and make them lighter... the straps are made from 1" x 1/8" corten steel with 1/2" lightening holes at 1" centres.

Very tidy build, nice strong frame !

Just being curious, will you bend up a nice shifter arm to located the shifter closer to the driver ????

Keep that perch pin, for a nice piece of wall art, of what could have occurred ! :)

AAWWwwwww! thanks guys for the kind words, sometimes when you have a vision it does'nt matter what others say - but having positive energy flow your way certainly feeds the passion...

Regarding the shifter - good spotting, mocked up the seats the other night and looks like it's gonna be reeeel close, I've got a long handled Hurst chrome stick out of a truck shifter kit, with a little "tweak" as you enquired, it will be sweet as. ;)

That's a tough-looking Coupe. I think it deserves paint - tidy it up and run it for a season to work out any bugs, but then finish it up nice.

Right on the money REM, the plan is to "break it in", go hard for a season then tear down and assemble it up niiiice - but I promise you this - it will never be a trailer queen

Made a rear bumper nerf bar, finished bottom fuel tank mounts, put the last of the threaded sleeves through the chassis rails...

Made a modification to the steering - I needed to slow down the 8:1 ratio of the steering box, so I've fitted a Howe 2:1 reducer out of a dirt late model. Pic's below show new mount to locate box from rotating under load.
