Can you guys help me with this... I have sbc400cid 500hp engine and now i have to build a transmission to it. So whats with the non lock and lock up converter some say you have to have lock up and some say lock up cant handle 500hp?? I have a 200-4R tranny Witch way is it Thanks for help -Mika-
Need your cam specs, gear ratio, vehicle weight and intended use of the car. Are you building the trans?
You're not going to have to worry about it. That 2004R won't hold up to 500 hp anyway, unless you spent about $2000.00 (US) to beef it up. Sorry man I just tell it like it is: http://www.webrodder.com/article.php?AID=426&SID=6
Well first of all, how sure are you on those hp numbers? Are they real or are you hoping? You see it takes a fair amount of money invested in an engine to pull a "real" 500 horse. If you think the actual horse is closer to being under 450 you may be alright due to it being in a lightweight vehicle. The other factor is are you planing on racing it and if so is it going to be with a sticky tire like a slick? If so then I would suggest you either beef up that 2004R or go with a heavier duty tranny like a 700R4, 4L60, 4L60e or even a 4L80e if you want an overdrive. There are also guys that build a Ford AOD that will bolt up to a GM block. Now that AOD would be a very good setup but it does get costly, more costly than beefing up that 2004R.
It was 450hp from rear wheels then my trans blew up on test dyno. And no im not going to race it...its just daily driver.
Well if you had 450 at the wheels then you have more than 500 at the crank and it already blew up a tranny in the dyno session. I'll tell you right now you'll need more than just a well built tranny. You'll need a damn good tranny if you want it to last with that kind of power. What was the torque number, about 435-460?
Yes something like that...im asking these things cos my knowledge is in trans is almost none And i dont actually know what went wrong with that trans at least that i know that 2nd went totally numb and converter threw up
I know the answer..... You're messin' with a good engine with strong torque & horse numbers. That engine will expose all your weak links like tranny, rear end and suspension. I think it's time for you to hold on 'cause it's gonna be a bumpy ride!
The buick gn guys used to be able to get those to work with big hp in a heavy car but it took lots of $$$ - if your married to the idea of overdrive the aforementioned units are good but i would go with a turbo 400 and never have a problem...
If your first transmission didn't even make it through a dyno session, that should tell you something. Don
Yea I was thinkin' that too but I'm betting that the OP want's O.D. because the price of gas is nutz overseas. The problem he's gonna have is room. He said he's got a '29. BIG engine - small car.
and thats only 98octane 100octane is 2euro litre thats 10.25 gallon What is VP fuel? how much is regular fuel in US?
VP is racing fuel that comes in various octanes. The VP I run at $9.00 p/gal. is 114 octane. I think that it's going up to $9.50 or $10.00p/gal. Ha Ha! I have to confess, right now I'm driving a Toyota Prius so I haven't bought regular gas in 3 weeks. But I think it was like $3.73 p/gal. last time.
200r4 is a great tranny and with that light of a car a built 200r4 would do just fine, With normal driving a 200r4 or 700r4 would also be fine. I understand the gas price issue guys, dont we all! haha Ive had a quote for a built 700r4 for my nova with a 2yr warranty for $900.
