Projects A little ghetto upholstery work!

  1. Thanks for the kind words!! It's just better than what was there and will be fine till I do a full new interior. Todd

  2. Give it a shot Todd, I never sewed anything in my life and I did this for my first try at it in my roadster. I used my wifes little brother sewing machine from Wal- Mart.

I did get my 9 + 3 from the little brown truck today.

Hook up with the Upholstery social group here on the HAMB. Lots of great tips on there.
I see many used commercial sewing machines for sale on CL even out in the pickers where I live. An investment of $500.00 for a used machine is a lot cheaper than the price of having it done.
Lots of places on line where you can buy real nice material for interiors, plus the pride of having done it yourself.

Looks great! I have some blankets just sitting in the car. Now that I've seen it done, I'll try it.

  8. It's a lot easier than you think. Start in the center and work your way out. Fold the edges so they are doubled up wherever you use a hog ring.

I like the pride part, but if you consider that you will have $500 in the machine, $250 in material and supplies, and many hours of your time invested, a $2,000 upholsterer's bill isn't absurd by any means. Especially if you start running into problems, like the fabric stretch isn't compatible with the pattern you made, and the seat covers don't look right, etc., etc. etc.

Still fun to do it yourself, but it can be a big undertaking.

Very nice. Looks better than most so called professional jobs. And at least you didn't have to pay big fees to ebay or PayPal to fund it.

My seats are worth big bucks as they are. When the time does come to get my upholstery work done, and I'm wondering what to do to cover the cost...

how did you attach the blanket with the hog rings?

I have a 38 Ford split bench and I want to cover the mohair, and that looks good.....mine being a convert blowes the blanket off and carpet tape will not stick to the mohair....
