Neat, I have long admired them where can I get one?

 

mine is plastic and not nearly that cool---but it works great---nice gift

I have a thread pitch gauge that takes up about two square inches in the tool box. Much more accurate that doing it by feel. $10 new.

Cool piece though.

I've had one for years, scored it from my local auto parts store when they were getting rid of it!!
Here in Australia "Champion Fasteners" supply them to Auto Shops and Hardware stores. I do not think they ussually sell them though. It has been very handy over the years!!

 

Does it do Whitworth and BCI threads??

That tool rustyfords posted is cool and I'd like to have one just because I don't have one already.

I also have a thread pitch gauge like the pic above. I wouldn't risk something important to my guess, but I almost always identify the thread correctly just by looking at it, maybe counting a few threads.

 

From the time I could walk my dad had me sorting out 5 gallon buckets of nuts and bolts. Now I can eyeball just about any bolt up to 3/4" accurately, Metric give me a little trouble since I don't know have all the pitches committed to memory but I can spot the fact that it is metric right off the bat.
Nice tool though and nice wife for thinking of it.

I have this Bolt Gauge from Fastenal.... It's inexpensive at $8, extremely useful, and easy to put in your pocket... Standard & Metric bolt diameters and threads, bolt length, and coarse/fine thread nuts

I have thread pitch guages for both standard and metric threads, they are real handy!

 

Now that I know what it is, I just got to figure out how to understand what its telling me

 

I'll be darn...to think my pop's could have been rich making them...lol.

One of the best jobs I ever had sorting nuts and bolts at 5 or 6 years old!

 

That's a neat gift, I could use one of those. There was a time when I could look at the hex head and know what size socket I needed, or look at the threaded part and know what size bolt it was, but any more I am not so good at it.

I have the portable version in both standard and metric since I have always had trouble sizing bolts. The portable version is able to go places on the car tho the wall version would be cool wall art that is useful as well

Each little gauge has profiles that match the thread pitch they are labeled for.

T.P.I. (threads per inch) for S.A.E. Or the measure of the thread for metric.



You still need to have a caliper for measuring the bolt though. But, as mentioned, over time the eyeball measuring system can do that.

The problem with the type show (by the O.P.) is that they don't always hold tight tolerances. So you can get sizes mixed up. A combo of both tools would be ideal.

Working in a hardware store, I can usually eye it and be right most of the time. The ones I find funny are the guys that come in with a machine screw, I ask them if it is SAE or metric, and they tell me, "it's off of a Jeep, so it must be American." Usually, metric. Can be a handy tool to verify your estimation. We have one each in the store.

 

I have one of those plus a thread dressing file..........good tools to have. I may have to get one of the boards like the OP has too.

 

That is a really neat tool for the shop. Never seen one before. I think I am going to order one.
