I'm looking at ways to improve my photos for the new year. Online courses are filling in the gaps and reminding of stuff I've forgotten. On top of technique improvements I'm also looking at equipment additions. One of the things I'm checking out is Lensbaby's line of stuff. Do any of you have one? Pros and cons? Show some car pics you took!
Yeah, it's like a reasonably priced tilt-shift. I have heard the image quality is a little lacking, but I'm hoping a HAMBer can tell me how much. A little could be written off as character. A lot and I might as well use Instagram.
My wife swears by hers, but I just fake it with Photoshop! The Lensbabny seemed difficult to me, but you have posted excellent examples.
I've always stayed away due to the quality, although I heard they started offering a better quality lens a while back. I say drop the gimmicks and work on better photography.

Better ability is always the goal, but it has some effects you just can't duplicate for the money. The funky tricks would be great compliments to a regular feature shoot.
Our office has one. The model that you can't lock into the position you want (no set screw adjuster things). I recommend buying the one that you can lock. It's cool, although we haven't used it much in the couple years that we've had it. I'm not anything close to a real photographer so I can't say much beyond that.

(with some reservations) For most of my life, I have been a professional photographer. Have used all of the equipment that you can think of. Lensbabies are fun to use every once in a while, but nothing will give you better results than a good prime lens with the aperture wide open.
Hey Kirk, I don't even know what the hell this thing is or really why I opened this thread, but maybe a bit of caution from a paper collector type is in order... If you do get this thing, don't go over board! I can remember certain eras of the major magazines that could be marked by the introduction of the "trick of the week" photography component. Weird fades, distortions, blurs, all that stuff just distracts from what most of us want to see - the car being filmed! You are one of the few people woking in the magazine business today that can take a super "artsie" kinda picture one minute,(I remember running around with my cell phone lit up in front of ElPolacko's one evening so you could do a long exposure shot with aliens) but you always step back and take an over all shot of the whole car before your done. Don't loose that please!
when I used to shoot on the regular (and get paid for it) i looked at these pretty hard. Then after all my looking i realized i could allready do what it was for in photoshop, and still keep my original photo that wasnt blurred anywhere for use elsewhere
Yeah, I can do almost anything in Photoshop, but it would take me far more time than in the camera. My time or one of my department's time.

Get a 50mm 1.8 and shoot all your details with it, and youll get a crazy drop off. Lens baby gave me one of the earlier models and it broke the first time I used it.....but what do I know
No offense, but you can tell its PS I agree, for detailed closeup, get a 50 1.8. I think I saw Sigma has a 30mm 1.4, I want one of them!
I have a lensbaby not the one you showed mine does not have the locking rods mine has a swivel ball and a locking ring on the bottom to hold it in place. both work the same way and really the only difference is how it zooms in. I love mine it creates very interesting shots I will see if I can get some on here in the next day or two. they are a great way to create attention where you want it and on what you want. I think they are worth it
