  3. Im in the copier printer business and one of the other techs was at a customers I had never been to before. He said you would really like this guys place. He has a car collection. He told me one of the "cars" was a red Ferrari car transporter from the 60s (he thought) he said it also had some old Ferrari's on it. I havent seen it yet, but I wonder if it is this one?

Here's some pics from 2002. It's a stunning collection. Most are O/T although he's got a real nice '41 Merc custom and a MG-TC built by Alex Xydias and Doane Spencer: http://www.pureluckdesign.com/ferrari/hart2002/pages/hart001.htm

And here's a 70+ page thread on Transporters (mostly Euro race stuff)

My favorite is the last hauler with the snowy 1940 Buick Super's (torpedo body). I have a 40 Buick special that I bought in 1964, my first car. I am currently re-rebuilding it. I originally built it as a street rod in 1981-82.

In the fifties and sixties, I grew up in at my Dad's shop which was next door to a truck stop. I remember sneaking over at night to look under the canvas covers on the car haulers to see the new model cars before they were released. My earliest recollection was the 55 Buicks, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles out of the GM Boxwood plant near Wilmington, Delaware.

  9. Excellent pics and thanks for sharing them. I love the old trucks and seeing them with all the various configurations of truck vs cabover style. Add in the trailers and methods for hauling the cars. Interesting to see how the capacity generally increased over time from just a few to many.

  12. When I first saw Tommy's rig I new I needed to build one like it. At the time I was racing Grand Prix Hydroplanes and traveling all over North America. My rig was custom built to haul the boat along with extra engines and parts. The motorcycle and sidecar rig was used on our off time and at the same time came in handy when running many of the back roads. The rig could sleep four and in a years time traveled around thirty thousand miles. Not the Tommy Ivo rig but it sure fit the bill for what we were doing at the time.
