A '63 Impala SS lowrider, 13" Corvair wires too, and an automatic. I was having trouble mastering the non-syncro first gear or my dad's Chevy truck. I bought the Impala for $300.00 in 1972, because my parents wouldn't let me use mom's new Buick wagon for my driver's test. They hated my Impala...

Had to take it twice (1966)... The first time was in a '63 Impala 2-dr hardtop. Touched one of the poles in the parking test and failed.

Second time was in a brand-new '66 Nova SS 327 4-speed. Passed with flying colors, then smoked the tires leaving the DMV. Got the stink-eye from the trooper administering the test, but he was already getting in the car with the next applicant. :D

My first car - 1950 Chevy 2 door "Town Sedan". Bone stock: 216, 3 on the tree. Not sure if I got brownie points for having my arm out the window to do turn signals, but I passed the first time. March 1978.

My first test was in my sister’s first car, a beat up ‘53 Austin A40 Summerset. Four speed on the column, lousy brakes, a piece of junk really but my dad wouldn’t let me drive his car because the insurance was too much (she could drive it because the insurance was something like $25 – same old). I failed the test because the examiner wasn’t familiar with the shift pattern on the four speed column shifter and thought I was messing up my shifts, and also because I nearly ran over a cop! He was on a Harley Servi Cycle and was leading a funeral procession by about half a block, no flashing lights or anything. He ran a red light right in front of me so I slammed on the brakes, such as they were. I couldn’t see the funeral procession because they were out of sight behind the buildings in the downtown core where I took my test and the examiner failed me for it. I made it on the second test but I’m still bummed about that failure.

The driving school car. He had a fleet of 69 camaros. Hulk green in color. Musta been a copo.
They were old then, and soon he had Vegas.

Years later I went to a friends girlfriends house, and down the street was a yard full of the 69s. The owner had saved some for his sons to drive. Some were street rodded, and others were beaters.

    And I had a gold 69 camaro.

My test was in Indiana in 1958 driving my Dad's new 1957 Buick Super. To my surprise I nailed the three point parallel parking the first try. Thank God for power steering! Fast forward fifty years when I took my 54 Bel Air hardtop to it's first Rod Run cookout. I had not had to parallel park for 40 years but to my utter surprise I could still do it.

1970 Chrysler that was only two years old then and pop kept the car , though it languishes in the back of the shed as we have too many old hot rods to choose from now.but it's still here.
