Ben Jr. and Stu Harpers Lakester at Muroc Lake 1947: This is one of two photos that we have posted on The Old Motor for Tom Harper whose father Ben and his Uncle Stu built this car and got it to go 120 at Muroc. We are trying to find out for Tom (who is a 4th generation racer and a stunt man) if this car still exists. Not long after this photo was take it was put on the street and you can see that photo on The Old Motor. I belive I may have seen a photo or two of the car here on the H.A.M.B. before. We also have two period dry lakes films posted which you are sure to enjoy. Please let us know if you can help.
Hugh Tucker's roadster was originally a '28 Chevy steel body. When Hugh used it for the mold for the glass body seen here, he took some "libertys" with modifications. The glass body was shortened a bunch between the door and rear wheel well. It was illegal as hell. Hugh told me it was never caught because none of the NHRA inspectors were familiar with early Chevrolet body dimensions. Look at the body seam under the door. That ain't right. Hugh said if a stock '28 Chevy roadster would have pulled up beside his car he'd have been screwed!
So is it too late to protest him?? He beat the pants off of me at San Gabriel, just remember the chevy emblem on the back as he went by me (and, to make it worse, I was driving a dragster!!!)
