I installed a Unisteer power rack and pinion unit on my '60 Starliner. I am using a stock AT column shifter. I looked at a couple different types of exhaust manifolds and aftermarket headers. I decided to go with FPA who make a rack and pinion header. They fit great. Contact Stan at FPA and he will hook you up. If you want pictures of the headers on the car let me know.
I have been thinking about the uni-steer for my Starliner but have been told the they do not allow you to turn as sharp as with the steering box set up? Do you notice any difference in the turning radius? Scott...
I don't have the car on the road yet but turning the wheel lock to lock there seems to be a lot of wheel travel. I will post pictures tomorrow.
An easy remedy. Open the picture on your computer and look at the top bar of the window. Select "edit pictures" and a dialog box will open on the right side of the screen. Select "compress pictures" and a row of buttons will appear. Select one of the buttons (document, webpage or email) and push the "resize" button below. The picture should make a little adjustment on the screen and show you that it is now much smaller than the original size. Save your changes and upload away.
I had FPA build a set of headers for my '62 Monterey with a rack and pinion conversion as well. Like fbcoach68 says, they look and fit great. Here is a few pics of my setup to keep the masses happy until he can get his pics posted. Edit: just a couple seconds too slow.
I have the drivetrain done and the brake system. We are concentrating on the body now. It is stripped to bare metal. Not real pretty to look at right now but making progress. I will get some other pics up.
Not really. It is a stainless steel heim joint from McMasterCarr with an oil-lite bronze bushing pressed into it. I just welded the end to the frame and smoothed the metal out around it. I don't have picture of the finished product. The pic above was during mock-up and the heim was just tacked to the frame to get positioning correct.
Ok here are a few pictures. One is putting the new rocker panels on. As you can see safety is our number one priority (after I took the picture of course).
One of the fenders is the original with a lower rear corner patch. When I started stripping the fender I found a bucket of filler. The other fender I bought from a guy in Sanger (near Bakersfield, CA). That one was pretty much perfect just had to strip it. The motor is actually a standard bore 390 now. It is the original block and heads that was in the car when I bought it. The heads are pretty cool. If I remember correctly the numbers on the motor made it a 1958. The heads have machined combustion chambers instead of cast from the factory. A set of hardened seats, guide work, valve job, new valves and a little polishing and they were ready to go.
I have a set of those heads. From what I remember the book said they where made the first 15 days of 1958.
Very cool. I did not realize they were special until I took them to a family friend that has been in the auto machine business for about 50 years.
