Yep Dan,----I remember when after WWII, they built the Pasadena "Expressway" going from North of L.A. city hall to So.Pasadena.
It was only about 2 miles long, but we always enjoyed that "No stop light" freedom traveling North for a very short time, with a narrow plant divider down the center!
Then in the 50's, everything went to building the L.A.Freeway system.:D:D

  3. This thread started as a wonderful idea, only to be ruined by posting all the travel post cards and magazine ads...Why not post just REAL PHOTOS from long ago?

Montrose is either '61 or '62 - yellow plate on the DeSoto and the tail of a '61 Coupe deVille across the street

Pasadena - Wikipedia lists that section of the Foothill Freeway on the left (paralleling the Colorado Boulevard bridge) as opening in 1966, but the cars look older...?

I was just here at Christmas this year, my daughter-in-law is a server at El Tovar, while my son works at Bright Angel. All the buildings are recognizable, even the hill looks the same except it's paved. The cars are a little more modern though.

Even the parking lot is the same. But not the entrance station.

Often wondered how Buzz and Todd could afford to trade in for a new Corvette each year. Of course, the first one was free, so that helped with the second Vette. Could not wait for the 1963 season with first look at their new Sting Ray! The luggage rack added a cool, adventurous look. And a necessity.

Ahhahahahaha - Dude, I did the same thing. Had to keep minimizing the screen when my mother-in-law would walk by. Must have spent 15-20 minutes verifying the accuracy of Ester Eddie's post.

    Right on, Eddie.

I'd rather look at postcards and magazine ads than read posts complaining about them, but that's just me :)

I friend of my wife's family came by and gave us a CD of images of his family and that of my wife from the fifties on. There are two pix - the first with her father and sister from The Pike at Long Beach (which is still there) and the second from a park in Sydney, Australia. Guess the cars

  29. I know it has been some time since this questionwas asked but, ...
anyway, my parents '62 Catalina wagon also had a full width mud flap and we did not drive on any dirt roads I can remember. we did pull a trailer though and a boat. My guess is they were sold to protect what you were towing.

Aside from the folks who ARE the owners depicted in these photos, or you know it's your car, do you ever wonder if maybe the car you are looking at is the EXACT one in your garage?

Every 51 Ford I see, especially the California cars, I wonder if maybe THAT ONE is the Grandpa car...
