Been using the search, reading old posts, trying to learn a little more. What years were 112's made? How about 552s? From when to when? When were they made without any Appleton or number markings on the shells? Are there unmarked 112s and 552s? Relative value of unmarked? Like everything else in this world, there seems to be more than one variation of all of them. Right or wrong? Thanks,HAMB
A guy on here with the user name "Chad s" seems pretty knowledgable. He threw some info my way when I was installing mine. Here's the thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=339106 Maybe you'll find some info in there. I'm pretty sure s-552's are late 40's to mid-50's time period. Good luck.
112's are prewar, early post war. 552s were the ones used on all the legendary late 40s and early 50s customs. I have two of the unmarked 112's with the more pointy buckets. 112's had the flip switch in the handle, and 552's had a push button switch in the handle.
Reading two post that claims that prewar and 552 late 40's early 50's... Well, are there anyone out that can show an old photo, taken before 1950, of custom that did use 552's? There earliest photos, of my knowledge, of customs with 552's are from 1950. It would be great to know when 552 production did start, from what I've seen I would guess 1950.
I have a few sets of appleton 552's.My merc was built from January 1953 to December 1954 and has appleton 552's and the push button switch is at the end of the handle.I have a couple more that have the switch on the side of the handle.I think they came both ways.Maybe the ones with the switch on the side are earlier ones.
